1st XV have bonus point win 45-17 at home to Rainey in Ulster League

This match was an opportunity to pitch ourselves against Rainey who are flying high in Division 2B of the All Ireland League.

Both clubs took the opportunity to give young players and bench players a chance to start. The game was played througout at a high tempo with both sides running the ball from everywhere.

For Rainey their strongest threat was a young backline, very dangerous with the ball in hand.

Instonians had the upperhand in the scrum, its lineout performed well and we are starting to show some real threat in attack. Good interplay between forwards and backs led to some great scores.

The first score of the match was one of the best individual tries seen for years: Young David Mcgovern (starting at hooher) took a delightfull pop pass from Chris Henderson, breaking the Rainey line. From halfway he outstripped the covering defence, left with only the fullback to beat he turned him inside out to dive over near the posts. Kenny Morton said it reminded of himself in his hayday – I must have be off that day. (7-0)

Rainey equalised with a try of their own, Alan Clarke full back chipping ahead, gathering it and popping to James McBride who finished it off. (7-7)

Insts 2nd try came form a line-out, moved wide and Matthew Wright receiving the ball of a great inside line. (12-7).

Half-time (12-7)

The 2nd half started with another try to Inst, great tackle from Seamus Mallon causing a turnover, picked up and finished off by Chris Henderson. (19-7)

Next score was another Inst try brought about by the improving scrum. Firstly Rainey were pushed off their own ball, the scrum then awarded to Inst led to a No 8 pick up and score by Andy Mckeen. (26-7).

Ben Mcdonnell took to the field and with his first touch, broke in midfield and ran in a good try. (33-7)

Seamus mallon made a great break and when the old man’s gas ran out popped inside to David Parklhill to finish of another try. (40-7)

Inst took the foot of the gas but the young Rainey side never gave up and scored two tries of their own out wide, helped by some poor one on one tackling. Both scored by Andrew campbell (40-17).

The last score of the game was a result of ex Rainey boy Michael Sargent who picked the ball up after a turnover at the breakdown, ran down the blindside and popped inside to Alan Whitten to finish it off. (45-17)

Overall a very entertaining game. Hopefully for both sides no injuries. Although for Inst gareth Mcclintock took a knock, we wish him a quick recovery. The Inst team from 1 to 20 gave 100% and things are definitely improving, plenty more to work on as always.

Next saturday is the SENIOR CUP SEMI FINAL away to Banbridge at 2.30.

Team 1 to 20: Joe Moynihan, David mcGovern, Alan Whitten, Matt Irwin, Mark Hill, Daryl Marshal, Stephen Douglas, Andy McKeen, Rory McCurry, Chris Henderson, Marcus Hart, Richard Fegan, David Parkhill, Matthew Wright, Gareth McClintock, Paddy Dornan, Jamie Lusk, Ben McDonnell, Seamus Mallon, Michael Sargent.

A very strong 3xv travelled to a sunny Belmont expecting to face a very good CIYMS team who are top of the league having already played 2nd and 3rd place this season. That is exactly what the boys met when they took the field, a well drilled, hard running 2xv who obviously train with their firsts.
We allowed ourselves to play the kind of game they obviously like, which is fast when we should have slowed the ball down and taken control of the game.
However it was great to be able to field a really good team with a front row for a change and we welcome back the legend that is John Carser. We defended really well under long periods of pressure with Mark Broome, Ryan Karayiannis, and in particular Zuhayr Booley all making their mark on opposition players with their defensive efforts.
We missed several opportunities to draw men and give the ball towards the end of the game which would have given the score line some respectability but it wasn’t to be. We can take out a number of positives from the game, JC’s return, the defensive effort, scrums and lineouts.

The unconverted first try was scored wide on the left by no8 Ethan Glover following some good work by the backs. The Inst pack was much smaller than the Bangor 8 but held their own with some excellent ball retention allowing the elusive Daniel Keane to score a second quality individual try on the right. Michael Weir was successful on this occasion with the conversion. Strong aggressive defense particularly around the breakdown ensured that Bangor did not score before half time.

With 26 players there were significant changes at half time which took time to bed in. Bangor exploited this early with their 6ft 2nd row out striping the Inst defense on the right to go in under the posts for a converted try. The Instonians team regained it’s composure with strong running from the forwards yielding a penalty 5 yards out. Quick thinking and crisp passing by the backs saw the ball arrive in the hands of David Mitchell who finished well for an unconverted try in the corner. With players getting tired some weak tackling allowed Bangor back into the game with an unconverted try from their speedy backs on the left. The Instonians U13 team held out well in the latter stages of the game whilst under some pressure to secure a deserved win.
