Virginia RFC U14s Progress to Ulster Cup Semi-Finals

Virginia U14s welcomed Coleraine RFC to Deerpark last Saturday for the Ulster Cup Quarter Final.

Just before kick off the skies turned from blue to black and the heavens opened to ensure both teams would be tested by the conditions as well as each other.

Virginia started with good intent, running the ball hard and spreading it through the hands, but the wet conditions were proving difficult for that sort of game plan with the ball being spilled all too often. This resulted in Coleraine taking advantage to run a try in on the wing. It became apparent a different approach was needed, so the Virginia pack worked closely together making good ground in the middle of the park eventually releasing Conor Nulty to cross the line and level the score at 5-5 at half time.

Virginia dominated the first 15 minutes of the second half with Mark Gibney, Ciaran Levi-Valensi and Nathan Tobin all bagging tries, and Eoin Bogan also crossing the line, but was unlucky to be held up. Injuries were mounting though in such a physically challenging game, and Virginia had four key players leave the field early due to knocks. Coleraine were able to claw back 2 tries of their own to make for a tense finale, but after some excellent defending at the death, it was Virginia celebrating at the final whistle with the scoreboard reading 22-17 to the home team.
Their Ulster Semi Final will be at home to either Newry RFC or Rainey Old Boys RFC on Saturday 29th April.
