Cookstown 52-0 Finn Valley

It was a case of a double return for Cookstown in their opening home fixture of the season. An empathic victory on their well-documented return to Drapersfield after an absence of nearly three seasons coupled with a hat-trick of tries from Liam Currie set them on their way to their second bonus point victory of the season.

A minor hiccup of a power outage in the changing rooms didn’t put a damper on a powerful start from the home side and despite wet and miserable conditions; McKenna added another try to his collection to ease whatever nerves the hosts may have had. An old fashioned maul and drive was what resulted in Cookstown’s second try with Liam Currie proving that the move to Kildare hasn’t affected his game any as he grounded the first try of his hat trick.

After the second try the hosts discipline lessened slightly and Finn Valley where unable to capitalise on two penalties in quick succession, in fact it was the home side who nearly added a third try on the stroke of half time but only brave Finn Valley defending right on the try line denied it

Cookstown started the second half with a bang and despite being denied by last ditch defending moments before; Mauricas added his name to the score sheet after the visiting defence was stretched. Currie added his second try of the afternoon soon after to seal the bonus point victory for Cookstown after a pick and drive.

A mistake at the back from Finn Valley was capitalised on by good pressure from O’ Neill and he set up the other Currie brother Ciaran to put the home side further ahead. Cookstown used this opportunity to give run out to Eastwood and Nugent, who was coming back from injury and the later showed good footwork to set up Liam Currie to complete his hat trick.

Two late tries from Jarlath Quinn sealed a 50-plus victory for the home side. The first came after good passing play found a gap in the Finn Valley defense and the second came from a kick and chase.

The club wishes Andrew Reid a speedy recovery after he had to come off injured in the only damper on an empathic victory on the return to Drapersfield.

Up next for Cookstown a visit to Omagh 4s on Saturday 1st October with a 2:30pm kick off. With both teams having 100% records its sure to be an interesting encounter
