George Clancy will get the 17th Heineken Cup tournament up and running when he takes charge of the match between Racing Metro 92 and Cardiff Blues at Stade Yves du Manoir on Friday, 11 November.
It will be the Irish referee’s 31st tournament match with French official Jerome Garces on duty at the other opening night contest when Harlequins meet Heineken Cup debutants Connacht Rugby at the Twickenham Stoop.

ERC, the tournament organisers, today (Saturday, 29 October), announced the match official appointments for Rounds 1 and 2 with Wayne Barnes, who was in charge of the Bronze Medal match at the World Cup, on duty at Ravenhill for Ulster Rugby’s contest against ASM Clermont Auvergne.
Dave Pearson (England) will referee reigning champions Leinster’s match at Heineken Cup newcomers Montpellier while the Scarlets, who will become the fifth club to play 100 Heineken Cup matches when they meet Castres Olympique at Parc y Scarlets, will have Greg Garner (England) in charge of their landmark fixture.
