Letterkenny 2s 7 – Cookstown 30
Cookstown advanced to the 2nd round of the McCambley cup thanks to a stunning 2nd half performance from the vistiors.
The vistors set the pace early on trying to stretch the home defence nearly opening the scoring but a final wayward pass saved the home team on this occasion. They did get an early penalty which was put into touch and Cookstown nearly capitalised but Letterkenny held firm to put the maul into touch. Cookstown weren’t able to continue the pressure and where penalised from the resulting lineout and the home side where able to clear.
The home side nearly opened the scoring against the run of play but Harte was on hand to put the ball out for a lineout. The visitors again nearly opened the scoring but it was a case of deja-vu and another wayward pass denied them. The visitors eventually took the lead thanks to a try in the corner from Nugent returning from injury. The visitors stretched the home side and it proved too much for them.
Boone nearly was in the corner himself soon after but was put into touch, with the home side nearly scoring themselves but for a great steal in the break down from Hazelton and overzealous tackling resulted in a penalty which allowed Currie to clear for touch. Cookstown nearly rounded off the half perfectly Harte breaking away and passing to McKenna but unfortunately it was deemed forward and that was that for the first half
Letterkenny started the second half well and took the lead with their winger benefiting from a couple of mistakes. This seemed to do nothing but spur the visitors on and they immediately scored up the other end, Quinn getting on the scoresheet leaving the home side no chance.
McKenna finally got his try on the day, as he was played in by Nugent for an easy score and a drop goal from Currie put the game beyond the home side. Boone scored the final try of the game to round off the win and the Black and Yellow can look forward to the next round
