Clipper Mixed Tag Rugby Tournament this Friday 7pm @ City of Derry RFC.

Ollie Phillips (Strade Francais) who is a member the GREAT Britain Clipper Crew and a Former Captain of England 7’s Rugby Team confirmed today that 8 of the 10 Clipper Crews will field a Team.

Former IRB International Rugby Sevens Player of the Year and Stade Francais star, Ollie Phillips, will be competing at Judges Road this Friday night at City of Derry’s ‘Clipper Mixed Tag 7s Tournament’.

England 7s captain Phillips was a late addition to the Clipper Race, signing up to the Great Britain Clipper Crew just five weeks before the start when a calf injury requiring gentle rehabilitation ruled him out of any action last season.

The Brighton-born centre and wing was a Newcastle Falcons player when he made his England debut and between 2004 and 2009 appeared in 17 World Series tournaments, captaining the side in 2008-09 when they clinched a first Wellington Sevens title and followed that by winning the London crown.

Phillips was duly voted the World Player of the Year that season and a move to Stade Français followed. He spent two seasons in Paris, playing in the 2010 European Challenge Cup final and, following injury, enjoyed a brief spell with Gloucester at the end of the 2011-12 campaign.

Philips has been engaging with rugby teams across the world during the Clipper stops, including the Springboks and Berkley CA, to spread the word about his experience in the race as a sports man.

Derry’s Mixed Tag tournament will see all the crews from the visiting Clippers – with the exception of Derry-Londonderry – compete against teams from the city and anyone who fancies a fun game is invited to come along and get involved.

The Judges Road club are inviting anyone who would like to have a go at non-contact Tag Rugby to come along. There will be a BBQ and music and it should make for a memorable experience for the both the visiting crews and local participants. The tournament gets underway at 7pm.
