Florida scientist and Australian wife develop new anti-odor protective spray
A deodorant-free way to stay fresh ST. PETERSBURG, FL. November 12th, 2021 – We know that its unhealthy to coat our body in chemicals to stop body odor, but until now it’s been the only option. SWIFF is the first alternative, an eco-friendly spray for clothes that stops odor-causers in their tracks before they get started. Invented at the University of Tokyo by American scientist, Dr. JJ Richardson, and transformed into a lifestyle product by his Australian wife, Susanna Chan Richardson, the long-lasting formulation stays on clothes for multiple washings and can also be sprayed on shoes, workout gear, bags, and household items. SWIFF’s silver and plant antioxidant ingredients are natural, safe, and hypoallergenic. Some silver-infused clothing can be purchased for a premium from specialty retailers, but the garments rapidly lose their odor-neutralization ability after washing. SWIFF lets anyone protect the clothing and gear they want to safeguard. This also means that there is no need to rush home to shower or change after exercising or making it through a stressful project at work.
Dr. Richardson (and his wife) noticed that his clothes were stinky at the end of the day after his bicycle commute from the laboratory. His wife prompted him to try applying the antimicrobial materials he was researching to his clothes. It worked, and she transformed it into a consumer-friendly, inexpensive fabric treatment to stop odors. They were motivated to find a solution for protecting Dr. Richardson’s favorite athletic shirts from odors as his own skin allergies prevented him from using deodorants and fragrances. He tested the product on his personal clothing by spraying one armpit of his shirts with SWIFF and leaving the other side untreated. Even after ten machine washings, the side with SWIFF has no smell. “It’s ideal for people who wear multiple layers like medical personnel, or those who wear hot, protective gear like firefighters and athletes,” says Dr. Richardson. “Everyday people can see a real benefit, too, and I use it for my shirts and my young son’s masks,” says Susanna Richardson. Dr. JJ Richardson is a Florida-born, UF-educated, Australian-PhD currently at the University of Tokyo. An active athlete, he no longer stinks while playing golf, snowboarding, breakdancing, rock climbing, or biking to work. Susanna Chan Richardson is an Australian-born, Monash-educated expert in outreach, engagement, branding, and fashion.
