Christmas Comes Early: Waiting Game is Over as Parody Rugby Video Hits the Screens

View the video here: https://youtu.be/LYTwwLtPOLw

The Aberdeen Standard Investments Melrose Sevens is paying tribute to the phenomena of the success of the John Lewis Christmas adverts to promote the 2018 event by premiering their own take on their classic ad, ‘The Long Wait’.

The parody video features an ‘overgrown child’ who can’t wait for his favourite day of the year to roll around – 14 April – so that he can give his parents a present of tickets for the Melrose Sevens. The annual tournament, which takes place in the birth place of the game of rugby sevens, is now in its 128th year.

Star of the show Sam McGrath (aged 27 going on 7) acts as the ‘small’ boy on the long wait as he tries to make time speed up with the help of spells and a magic wand, growing increasingly frustrated waiting for April 14 to arrive. His long-suffering family are shown tolerating his long faces, bouts of boredom and irritability as time drags on – but he has nice a surprise in store for them at the end.

Douglas Hardie, president of Melrose Rugby said: “Rugby fans have a sense of humour and we think they’ll enjoy this light-hearted spoof. The good news is that the tournament is fast approaching now, and it won’t be long now until April 14 arrives.”

Tickets for the event start from £10 for children, £15 for senior citizens and £20 for adults. Family tickets are also available for £50, admitting two adults and two children.

Even if you can’t make it to Melrose, you can watch BBC coverage on BBC Scotland which is available outside Scotland on Freesat and Sky ‎Channel 970 and Virgin Media Channel 102.

DODDIE WEIR UP FOR LAUREUS

SPORTING MOMENT GLOBAL VOTE

· Scottish rugby legend in contention for Laureus Sporting Moment Award for delivery of match ball at Scotland v New Zealand fixture in November

· Former Scotland lock fighting battle against Motor Neuron Disease and raising funds and awareness through My Name’5 Doddie Foundation

LONDON, April 1, 2018 – Scottish Rugby legend Doddie Weir, who revealed in June last year that he is fighting Motor Neuron Disease, is in contention for the Laureus Sporting Moment of the Month public vote. Doddie, who has 61 caps for Scotland, is recognised for his emotional delivery of the match ball at the Scotland v New Zealand match in November and his fundraising and awareness drive through the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

Each month, from March to December, the public can select their favourite Moment from a shortlist of four videos, chosen by the sporting legends of the Laureus World Sports Academy. Monthly winners will then go head-to-head in a final public vote, with the winner being announced at the 2019 Laureus Awards Ceremony.

Commenting on his contention for the Laureus Sporting Moment of the Month, Doddie Weir said: “The reaction I have had from the rugby and wider sporting world has been incredible, and I’m grateful for the support we continue to receive through the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. I’ve walked out onto that pitch at Murrayfield so many times but to do so with my three sons was special, the reception we received was something my family and I will never forget. I am a firm believer in the power sport can have to instil hope and inspire so it is an honour for me to be in contention for the Laureus Sporting Moment Award.”

Laureus Academy Chairman and All Black rugby legend Sean Fitzpatrick, said: “Doddie Weir is a legend of our sport and is famous for his fun, positive and light-hearted approach to life. The fact that he has taken a similar approach to his diagnosis for MND, and is raising funds and awareness for research into the disease, is inspirational. The reception he received from a packed Murrayfield ahead of the All Blacks match was both emotional and incredible in equal measure, a fitting tribute to a great man.”

Along with Doddie’s Moment, April’s contenders include Brazilian Formula 1 legend Felipe Massa and an emotional message from his son at his final race in his home country, the remarkable return to action of cancer-suffering Paralympic star Bibian Mentel-Spee and a historic kiss between US snowboarder Gus Kenworthy and his boyfriend at the Winter Olympics.

The Laureus Sporting Moment Award demonstrates qualities such as fair play, sportsmanship, drama and dedication, and looks beyond the scoreboard or podium. They are the emotional and inspirational aspects of sport which keep fans on the edge of their seats and symbolise the true values of sport, bringing to life the message that sport has the power to change the world.

To view these emotional and engaging Moments and VOTE for your favourite, visit myLaureus.com. Sports fans can also send videos that they have seen and enjoyed to myLaureus.com and they will be considered for the shortlist in future months.

It started with putting digitally enhanced images and designs onto jewellery, such as earrings, necklaces and rings. We then converted our products into decorative novelty watches upon finding a manufacturer who could assemble the watches for us.

We never intended to compete with big watch brands, as our brand was all about individuality through unique limited-edition designs. To keep it that way, we have partnered with an assembler who will do a maximum of 50 pieces with each design. This ensures that the wearer of our bohemian watch designs will feel sophistication and pride, knowing that few people wear the same watch.
The slip-through nylon and vegan leather bands allow you to customize and change the look of your watch to further allow for your unique style to show.
Apart from the design complexity, our commitment to customer satisfaction transcends the quality of our products. Our watches are made of high quality Japanese mechanisms, so the accuracy of telling time is assured of each watch.
Our watches come in natural cardboard recyclable packaging to reduce waste, allowing you to feel good about each purchase.
All in all, our unique and customized watch designs will bring customers all over the world a feeling of elegance and distinction. Sensational Slab Tiles from the Stone & Ceramic Warehouse

The Stone and Ceramic Warehouse’s impressive range of slab tiles are proving hugely popular. Beautifully displayed in their new slab tile showroom, these dramatic tiles are a fabulous option for anyone looking for bold, low-maintenance surfaces.

Spanning from 120 x 240cm up to a huge 160 x 320cm, the collection includes a stunning range of designs, from realistic marble effects to industrial metallic looks. The range even includes enormous patterned tiles which will rival any work of art.

The designs are available to view in their full, impressive size at SACW’s new Chiswick showroom. This contemporary space has been especially designed to showcase even the largest of slab tiles. The displays make it easy for customers to envisage how these striking products can enhance their own projects.

“Slab tiles are an excellent low-maintenance solution for any kind of room,” commented Chris Grainger, Managing Director of the Stone and Ceramic Warehouse. “Thanks to their large surface area, porcelain slab tiles create a continuous, uninterrupted finish with very few grout lines, making them easier to keep clean. Using oversized tiles also tricks the eye into thinking that the room is much bigger than it really is, creating a sense of scale.”

Porcelain is an excellent option for anyone looking for a durable, but stylish surface. It is hard-wearing and stain resistant, meaning it does not require sealing, a specialist cleaning regime or maintenance. In addition, the cost of porcelain is at least 60% cheaper than the stone it imitates. Fitting can be as much as 50% less as it is quicker to install and, due to the thickness and weight, easier to handle, making it an ideal solution for anyone looking for a beautiful, professional finish.

Team England names Men’s Rugby Sevens side named for Commonwealth Games

Team England has announced its men’s rugby sevens squad that will represent Team and Country at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Australia.

The squad consists of 12 players, as well as one travelling reserve.

England’s men finished fifth at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Tom Mitchell will captain the men’s side and will be joined by his teammates from Glasgow 2014 including Dan Bibby, Phil Burgess, Dan Norton, Mike Ellery, Charlie Hayter and James Rodwell.

World-record try scorer Dan Norton will make his third appearance in a Team England jersey alongside England Sevens’ most capped player James Rodwell, while Mike Ellery is one of four players who will play his second tournament for Team England.

Alex Davis, who was initially selected as part of the Rio 2016 Team GB squad but withdrew because of injury, will make his Commonwealth Games debut in Australia.

The 2017 England Sevens Player of the Year Richard de Carpentier is also included in the squad along Ethan Waddleton and Harry Glover. They’re joined by Charlie Hayter who will play the role of 13th man.

The men’s team have been drawn in Pool B alongside hosts Australia, Samoa and Jamaica.

Men’s head coach Simon Amor said: “We’ve been fortunate enough to have six World Series tournaments in which to work the guys, and for them really to fight for these spots.

“What’s been most pleasing has not only been our progress in terms of how we’re looking to play and change our style of game, but also to get to this point half way through the year with pretty much everyone fit to pick from barring Tom Bowen.

“This has been great for the selection but has created a real challenge for me as a coach to pick a final twelve.”

Tom Bowen was not available for selection due to a knee injury sustained on the Vancouver leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

Amor added: “This particular multisport event poses a unique challenge over the previous ones that both myself and the players have been involved in with it being right in the middle of the season, but we’re really excited about getting out there and being a part of Team England on the Gold Coast.

“We know how tough Samoa will be and Jamaica, on the back of the Hong Kong World Series qualifier, will have nothing to lose when we face them in our first game.

“Additionally, the opportunity to go to Australia, to play in a Commonwealth Games in a country that’s so passionate about sport, and to have them in our pool will be brilliant.

“They’ve been a really great side so far this season and we’ve managed to be successful in the two times that we have played them this year, and I think the opportunity to play them in front of their home fans there will be a great experience for everyone.”

COMMONWEALTH GAMES BACKS 2018 IT’S A PENALTY CAMPAIGN TO PROTECT CHILDREN AROUND THE WORLD

· It’s a Penalty exists to protect children from abuse and exploitation globally through work on the ground

· 2018 sees the largest campaign to date. It’s a Penalty were the only charitable campaign to have a presence within the Park at the Winter Olympics and Paralympics in PyeongChang, South Korea

· Focus now turning to Australia’s Gold Coast in Australia where the XXI Commonwealth Games are due to get underway 4th – 15th April

· Previous campaigns have helped facilitate the protection of over 16,300 victims and have impacted over 519 million people worldwide

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) and the Commonwealth Games Federation have thrown their weight behind the 2018 charity campaign It’s a Penalty, ahead of the upcoming XXI Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast, Australia. Harnessing the power of sport and its ability to unite and to break cultural barriers, It’s a Penalty positions major sporting events as platforms for positive change by educating, equipping and encouraging the general public to #knowthesigns of child abuse and exploitation, to understand the penalties for offenders and to take action – ‘If you see something, say something’.

The 2018 campaign is the largest to date with the forthcoming Commonwealth Games and the Cathay Pacific / HSBC Hong Kong Rugby Sevens the third and fourth events to be targeted, having already had a significant presence at the Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games and the Super Bowl this year. The need for the campaign has never been stronger, with recent stories in the media highlighting the very real examples of child exploitation that happen throughout sport. It is also an issue particularly relevant in Australia, where 1 in 5 Australian children will be sexually harmed in some way before their 18th Birthday. [1]

GOLDOC CEO, Mark Peters said they were pleased to support It’s a Penalty by providing the opportunity for them to share their message with more than a million attendees, media and officials across the eleven days of world class sport.

“We hope through the various initiatives implemented during GC2018 that IaP achieves its goal of educating the general public and generating a greater awareness of how to recognise the signs of child abuse.”

Collaborating with GOLDOC and Australia’s leading child protection organisation Bravehearts, the campaign targets sports fans that have travelled to the event, athletes and locals through a variety of tactics. These include a short film which features sporting legends including Cathy Freeman, Liam Malone and Usain Bolt, which is being shown across five major airlines – Cathay Pacific, Cathay Dragon, British Airways, Virgin Australia, and American Airlines –, as well as within all sporting arenas at the Games and at 16 cinemas around Queensland. It’s a Penalty will also have a manned presence in the chill out zone at the Carrara Stadium and will be giving out collateral about what the campaign stands for, posters and coasters will be placed in bars around the Gold Coast, and wrist bands and leaflets will also be found in all athlete and media packs.

Also voicing support for the campaign was David Grevemberg CBE, Chief Executive Officer of the Commonwealth Games Federation as he stated: “The Commonwealth Games Federation aims to be a global leader in the promotion and protection of human rights and child safeguarding. We’re proud to support, share expertise and partner with It’s a Penalty to help develop this important global child-safeguarding initiative in 2018.”

An international initiative, It’s a Penalty works with the governing bodies of sport and organisers of the sporting events, hotel partners, international airlines, NGOs, NGBs and other stakeholders within global sport to not only highlight the global problems of child abuse and exploitation but also the specific dangers of vulnerable children being groomed and exploited during global sports events[2].

It does this by:

· Educating sporting fans, tourists, local residents and the general public about the issue, and about the penalties for offenders, as well as to #knowthesigns of child abuse and exploitation in order to report it

· Encouraging people ‘If you see something, say something’

· Equipping the general public with global mechanisms to report what they have seen through a local telephone or text number

The campaign was originally conceived by Sarah de Carvalho MBE and UK charity Happy Child International to protect children and eradicate child exploitation in the run-up to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and, subsequently, the Rio 2016 Olympics and Paralympics. Central to the campaign was the education of sports fans, tourists, athletes and local residents on the risk of inadvertently having paid-for sex with children aged 17 or under, believing them to be older.

By working in conjunction with NGOs around the world, British authorities and the Metropolitan Police, It’s a Penalty, together with their partners, helped facilitate the protection of over 16,300 victims of child exploitation during the 2014 football World Cup and the 2016 Olympics & Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro. The It’s a Penalty campaign has now reached and impacted 519 million people worldwide.

The long-term objective of It’s a Penalty is to achieve systemic change in order to protect children on a global scale. To achieve this goal, they are advocating for the global enactment and implementation of Extraterritorial legislation against child exploitation, which will allow countries to prosecute their citizens for the abuse of children abroad.

DAILY DÉJÀ VU: WHOPPING NINE IN TEN BRITS STAR IN THEIR OWN VERSION OF GROUNDHOG DAY

Nine in ten Brits claim they are stuck in their very own version of Groundhog Day, from leaving the house at precisely the same time every morning to eating the same lunch every day
Study unveils we are creatures of habit, with 67 percent of us saying we are “stuck in a rut”
The average Brit spends six hours every week dreaming about doing things differently and trying new experiences.
Behavioural psychologist, Jo Hemmings comments on the findings

NINE in ten Brits are facing daily déjà vu, claiming they are stuck in their very own version of Groundhog Day, according to new research.

The study of 1,500 adults took an in depth look into the daily routines of Brits and discovered the extent to which we are creatures of habit, with 67 percent of us saying we are “stuck in a rut.”

But the appetite for change is there, with the average Brit spending six hours every week dreaming about doing things differently, going somewhere new, trying new experiences or doing something they have never done before.

Commisioned by Highland Spring, the findings unveiled that many as 22 percent of Britons eat the same lunch every day, while one in five order the exact same take-away on a Friday night and 21 percent cook the same meals on rotation week in, week out.

More than one in three (37 percent) said they leave the house at precisely the same time every day and one in ten buy the same bottle of wine week in, week out.

And 14 percent said they have the same conversation with their other half every evening about the same things, including people and work.

Nearly three quarters (71 percent) of safe and steady Brits have booked the same holiday more than once, with the typical holiday maker travelling back to their favourite destination FIVE times.

Furthermore, according to the data, 84 percent don’t ever stray from their weekly shopping list and only 16 percent said they like to mix things up and try new foods.

It isn’t just our food choices that we are wedded to. People’s jobs were found to be the most repetitive area of their life, followed by their cleaning routine and daily commute.

The poll marks the launch of Highland Spring’s ‘H20omph’ campaign which encourages the nation to celebrate life by venturing outside of their comfort zone, just a little bit. Behavioural psychologist, Jo Hemmings, said:

“Over a third of Brits (35 percent) said that being a creature of habit was just a part of life, and familiarity can be very comforting.

“But while routine is comforting, it can also be a major cause of boredom, demotivation and can leave us feeling like it’s Groundhog Day! There are so many quick and easy, big and small ways we can mix things up and make the most of everyday. Take a routine work day – and shake it up a bit. Small changes can make big improvements in our daily routine.

More than four in ten (45 percent) worry about the cost of trying new things and 16 percent reckon they are scared of the unknown but trying new experiences needn’t be expensive or scary!

“We do need an element of predictability to reduce cortisol, the stress hormone. Modifying certain areas of our lives, such as trying a different sport, or simply changing our regular meal times or journeys, enables us to break out of the monotony cycle and has been shown to make us more adventurous overall. We have a release of feel good endorphins during exercise for example, or a rush of adrenalin doing something new, even as we simply anticipate it.

“Rather than going back to the same holiday destination time and time again – simply take the ingredients that you like, whether that’s a beach, child friendly hotel, sightseeing or an activity-based break, type them into a search engine and see what new and unexplored adventures await.

“Setting ourselves new goals and challenges outside of our regular comfort zone – however small – can inspire us, make us feel more creative and more satisfied with life overall, improving both our self-esteem and our self-confidence.”

Karen Crowley, Head of Consumer Marketing at Highland Spring, added: “We’re all naturally driven to make the most of everyday and being properly hydrated helps us get there. It’s about balance – with small changes making surprisingly significant differences to our quality of life and ultimate well-being.

“It’s all about diving in to something new and thriving on those fun, unexpected moments. That’s why we’re giving the nation 10,000 chances to win new experiences with added H20omph.

“32 percent of go-getting Brits said they were going to make 2018 a year to remember. Whether it’s taking an iconic train journey or reinvigorating an everyday cinema experience, we’re offering consumers the tools to help them on their way.”

Borders’ Best Bite: Aberdeen Standard Investments Melrose Sevens Attempts to Predict Outcome with Foodie Competition

Tensions are mounting in the Scottish Borders this April… but it’s not just the Aberdeen Standard Investments Melrose Sevens that has the region getting ready to compete.

The historic rugby tournament has launched a search for the Borders’ favourite traditional snack, mirroring the competition between clubs from across the Borders that will be found on the rugby pitch at The Greenyards on April 14. The local sides will be joined by teams from across the country and around the world for one of the country’s most highly anticipated sporting events.

But before the players set foot on the pitch, organisers are interested to see if the region’s favourite sweet treats can predict the outcome, pitting five traditional local foods against each other to find the Borders’ Best Bite.

The Aberdeen Standard Investments Melrose Sevens is no stranger to links with food – the game of rugby sevens was the brainchild of Melrose butcher Ned Haig, who created the sport in 1883. And just last year, members of the Scottish Women’s Institutes created black and yellow striped sausages – filled with black pudding and pineapple – to commemorate the tournament.

The Borders’ Best Bite will see the following five traditional Borders treats compete against each other to vie for the title of Borders’ Best Bite:

Melrose Tart – devised by local bakers, Alex Dalgetty and Sons, the Melrose Tart is packed with honey, brown sugar and ginger – all of which have historic ties with the town. The bright yellow and black icing mirrors the strip of the local Melrose RFC.

Hawick Balls – these minty, buttery boiled sweets were a real favourite of renowned rugby commentator Bill McLaren. Made for decades to a secret recipe, they’re known by rugby fans up and down the country.

Selkirk Bannock – handmade in the Borders for over 100 years, the Selkirk Bannock is an institution. Packed with sultanas, the sweet fruit bread is a firm favourite and owes its unmistakable flavour to a long dough fermentation process.

Jethart Snails – handmade in the town of Jedburgh, it is believed that the recipe for Jethart Snails was gifted to the Millar family for their kindness to a French prisoner held in the local jail during the Napoleonic war. Now made by the Shaw family to the same secret recipe, they’re still a firm favourite.

Border Tart – crumbly pastry encases a moist coconut and almond sponge, filled with sultanas and cherries. It’s not associated with a particular town like many of the others, but it’s a firm favourite across the Borders and is representing all the teams without their own unique delicacy.

Fans of the sweet treats are encouraged to lend their support to their favourites on social media using the hashtag #BordersBestBite. Hungry rugby fans can vote for their favourite on Facebook at www.facebook.com/melrosevens or Twitter @melrosevens to decide which will be crowned the favourite snack ahead of the highly anticipated tournament on April 14.

Martin Gilbert, co-chief executive of title sponsor Aberdeen Standard Investments, says, “After 128 years of competition, it’s no wonder that the teams from across the Borders relish the chance to come together at the Aberdeen Standard Investments Melrose Sevens to face off against each other. The same can be said of the Borders’ traditional foods – each town is as fiercely proud of its produce as it is its sevens team.

“The Aberdeen Standard Investments Melrose Sevens is more than just a rugby tournament – it is an important part of life in the Scottish Borders, and this search for the region’s favourite foodstuff is another way for fans to get involved and show their support.”

Douglas Hardie, president of Melrose Rugby Club says, “There’s a friendly rivalry between rugby clubs in the Borders which is brought to the fore at the Aberdeen Standard Investments Melrose Sevens. It really adds to the atmosphere on the day, as the towns come together to back their teams.

“We thought it would be fun to replicate the rivalry on the pitch in the kitchen, to see which Borders treat is the region’s favourite. And maybe we’ll be able to predict the outcome of the tournament on April 14 when we see which town I victorious.”

The Aberdeen Standard Investments Melrose Sevens takes place at The Greenyards on Saturday April 14 and makes a great day out for families, couples and rugby fans who enjoy fast and exhilarating sporting action. Tickets for the event start from £10 for children, £15 for senior citizens and £20 for adults. Family tickets are available for £50, admitting two adults and two children.

If you can’t make it to Melrose, be sure to watch BBC coverage from 2-7pm in your local watering hole on BBC Scotland which is available outside Scotland on Freesat and Sky ‎Channel 970 and Virgin Media Channel 102.
