DROMORE 85 – ARMAGH 2s 0
Dromore welcomed Armagh 2s to Barban Hill on Saturday last in the first round of the Wylie Millar McCall Junior Cup.
The conditions were perfect for running rugby and the spectators were treated to a festival of running rugby and it soon emerged that the young Armagh outfit were not in the same class as the hungry and determined home side. A quick hatrick by the veteran Harshaw and two classy tries from the backline through Blair McDonald and Stewart saw Dromore take control of the match. Dromore were running everything and Man of the Match Jonny Maguire impressed throughout with his tireless support play. Steenson and Cobb were controlling the game at half back and Dromore added a further two scores through McCandless and McClearn to leave the score 45-0 at the break.
Dromore pilled on the scores at beginning of the second half, with Jenks getting two on the right wing, and Kinghan, Fitzpatrick, Stu Russell and McGregor all ended up on the scoresheet. With out half Ryan Cobb in blistering form with the boot converting 10 of the 12 Dromore tries and adding an early penalty, this added to the Armagh woe and the referee called time on the fixture early on 60 mins on the insistence of the Armagh captain.
Coach Bekker was happy to get the win and to progress to the second round of the Junior Cup – ” that was a good hit out for us today, we had almost a full panel to pick our team from this week and the competition for places in training is showing in the team’s performance on the pitch, I wouldn’t read too much into the big score line today but I’m happy with the way we are progressing. Back to business this week in training and we will look forward to entertaining Ballymoney at home in the league next Saturday”
