The ladies made the trip to Omagh for their last league game of the season. Unbeaten so far, the girls had to win if they wanted the title as Derry were sitting a close 2nd. Donegal played with a strong breeze in the 1st half but chose to keep it in hand. This paid of after some excellent ball retention from our forwards. The ball was shipped out to the backs by Linda Kenny. They put the ball through the hands with pace and Helen McPartlan would run in for the games opening score.
Donegal would keep the pressure on showing some lovely ball work in the forwards with offloads from Nao Cannon setting Elaine Britton free to charge through the forwards with the support of Niamh Horan and Joanne McCormack. This great work would lead to our 2nd try when quick hands again from Lorraine Molloy and Martina Cunningham set Brona Clarke free down the clubhouse touchline. With all of the Donegal supporters roaring her on from the sideline she would sprint over for donegals 2nd try. Half time score 10-0 to Donegal.
The 2nd half started Donegals way again when everytime Omagh looked like breaking Donegals strong defence we would come away with the ball thanks to some brilliant choke tackles from Enya O’Callaghan and Claire McGlinchey. Donegals 3rd try came from a penalty when Elaine Britton would make good yards to give Tracy Connaghan the momemtum she needed to get over for her try. Sadly Elaine would have to leave the field with a calf injury being replaced by Hannah Cullen. She got stook in right away and made good yards for Donegal up the touchline.
When Omagh couldn’t break our strong defence they tried to kick over the top and use the wind to their advantage but some excellent positioning from fullback Laura Kenny, she tidied them up and ran back with determination looking to get the bonus try. It eventually came for Donegal when Omagh couldnt handle the hard running ladies and Tracy would get over again for her 2nd try. Helen would slot the convertion. Donegal made a final substitution when Deborah Harvey would make her welcome return to the ladies team after spending time abroad. Omagh would make one last go for a try but Donegals defence, as it had all day stood strong. When the final whislte blew the celebrations erupted and Donegal were League Champions. Final score 22- 0 to Donegal.
Great performances from everyone on the day with Tracy Connaghan and Claire McGlinchey carrying great ball in forwards and Helen McPartlan and Lorraine Molloy linking well in the backs but Woman of the Match had to go to Linda Kenny. Her work rate all day in attack and defence was outstanding.
