Summer 2012 appeared at Donaldson Park to usher the new season in on Saturday last when Donaghadee welcomed Queens, Limavady and Suttionians to a Mini Tournament. Although the crowds of spectators basked in the unfamiliar weather the heat proved difficult for the players who certainly aren’t used to preforming in those temperatures. The tournament took the form of 2 x 20 minute sessions with each 1st XV playing two of these games and the 2nd XVs from Donaghadee & Limavady playing a one-off controlled game on the bottom pitch. Donaghadee, who took the opportunity to blood many new faces, lost their first game to a rejuvenated Limavady side but then came from behind to beat Suttonians surprising the AIL 2B side with a concerted effort in the last ten minutes which brought a well-deserved victory. The Dee coaching team will be reasonably pleased with the performances of both the 1st & 2nd XV squads which, above all else, will have got rid of any pre-season ring rustiness. Thanks go to the band of referees from the Ulster Branch who officiated in all the games – a welcome run-out for them as well prior to the serious stuff beginning in a couple of weeks.
During the course of the afternoon there were various games, bouncy castles and stalls available for the kids (of all ages) with a hardy band of helpers keeping the BBQ lit – thanks to all who assisted in these ventures.
After the rugby was over players from each of the Clubs involved appeared in fancy dress and took part in a “Special Olympics” series of events which proved a superb opener to the social side of the season – but none of which will be appearing as either Olympic or Paralympic sports anytime soon. Congratulations to all but especially the Limavady lads who are unquestionably one of, if not the, most accomplished tourists affiliated to the IRFU.
Things take a step-up this incoming Saturday when the Dee 1st & 2nd XVs make the short trip to Uprichard Park to take on their counterparts at Bangor in the annual Rodney Gray Cup. At the time of going to press kick off time is 1:30pm but keep an eye on the Club Facebook site for any late changes to this.
Members are reminded that subscriptions for 2012/13 are now due and payable so please seek out Membership Secretary Gavin Wallace and make his day.
