The Gary Clarke Memorial Tournament took place on Wednesday 11th September when Lurgan College, Portadown College, Banbridge Academy and Friends’ School, Lisburn participated in the event. Banbridge Academy won the competition, which was hosted at Lurgan Rugby Club, as a result of tries scored in the course of the evening.
Banbridge Academy defeated Portadown College by 12-7 with Dovydas Liutvinas and Harry Patterson scoring the tries, one of which was converted by Harry Patterson. The Banbridge Academy team defeated Lurgan College by 5-0 with Adam Hanna touching down for an unconverted try and completed their games with a 0-0 draw against Friends’ Schoool, Lisburn.
The Friends’ School, Lisburn team defeated Lurgan College by 3-0 with Reece Malone converting a penalty opportunity. The Friends’ School team then defeated Portadown College by 7-0 with Jack Harte scoring the try which was converted by Reece Malone.
Portadown College defeated the Lurgan College team in their pool game.
Despite the fact that both Banbridge Academy and Friends’ School, finished level on points it was the Banbridge Academy team, captained by Ulster U19 player, Adam Hanna, that picked up the Gary Clarke Memorial Trophy having scored three tries in the course of the evening. Adam Hanna also picked up the Player of the Tournament Award.
On Saturday 14th September there was a full list of schools’ friendly fixtures played.
Antrim Grammar School played Wellington College, Belfast, Campbell College 3rdxv and Ballyclare RFC U18s in a 2×20 minute tournament which was enjoyed by all the participants.
Ballyclare High School hosted Belfast Royal Academy and recorded a comfortable a 52-17 victory. The Ballyclare High School team had built up a 19-12 lead by the break with tries from Mark Jackson, Matthew Spence and Adam Barron. Mark Jackson was successful with two conversions.
The second half saw the Ballyclare team score five more tries through Robert Reid, Mark Jackson, who touched down twice, Matthew Spence and Andrew Petrie. Mark Jackson added three further conversions with Scott Martin kicking one.
The Belfast Royal Academy points came through tries from Eliot Donaldson, Aaron Gooderham and Jack McKee. Ryan Jameson was successful with one conversion.
Ballymena Academy recorded a hard earned 31-27 victory against the high flying Wallace High School team. The Ballymena Academy team had taken a 24-8 lead into the interval with tries from Harry Andrews, Adam Lamont and James Wright. Ross McKay was successful with all three conversions as well as one penalty kick. The Wallace High School points came through a penalty from Jack Dillon and an unconverted try from Harry McMeekin.
Dean Millar scored a try early in the second half which was converted by Ross McKay. After this it was the Wallace High School team that took control of the game and they ran in three tries, two of which were converted. Harry McMeekin, Scott Wilson and Reuben Crothers scored the tries with Jack Dillon adding two conversions.
Belfast High School played Limavady Grammar School and recorded a 36-5 victory. Aaron Douglas, Scott Hutton, Jacob Ogle, Jordan Hull, Ben Reid and Andy Hewitt scored the Belfast High School tries with Aaron Douglas adding three successful conversion kicks.
Owen Hogg scored the unconverted try for the Limavady Grammar School team.
Coleraine Grammar School hosted Cambridge House School and Larne Grammar School in an early season round robin tournament. The Coleraine GS team defeated Cambridge House Grammar School by 7-0 with Cameron Leighton scoring the try which Harry Caskey converted. Coleraine then went on to defeat Larne Grammar School by 21-0 with tries from Rory Telfer, Tom Curry and Charlie Carmichael. Harry Caskey was successful with all three conversions.
Larne Grammar School secured an 8-5 victory against Cambridge House with a try from Jack Withers and a penalty from Euan Glenn.
James McNabney scored the unconverted try for the Cambridge House Grammar School team.
Dalriada School played Grosvenor Grammar School and had to work hard for their 33-10 victory. James McCormick touched down for two tries with Jack Kirk, Cameron McIlroy and Paddy Steele each scoring one try. Aaron Gervais was successful with four of his conversion kicks.
Down High School hosted Omagh Academy in a game the Down High School team won by 34-17. Two Luka Walsh penalties saw the Down High School team into a 6-0 lead. In response the Omagh Academy scored an unconverted try through Daniel Cairns to see the teams turn around at the interval with the Down High School team in a 6-5 lead.
The second half saw the Omagh team start strongly with Matthew Hunter crashing over the Down line for an unconverted try which saw his team into a 10-6 lead. Luka Walsh then kicked three penalties for the Down High School team to see them regain a 15-10 lead. Rory Wilson then ran in for two tries with Joe Charles touching down for one. Luka Walsh added two conversions to see the Down High School team into a 34-10 lead. The Omagh team kept working right to the end of the game and got some reward for their endeavours when David Braden touched down for a converted try which left the final score reading 34-17 in favour of the Down High School team.
Both teams were playing their first full game of the season when Friends’ School, Lisburn hosted the Royal School, Dungannon team in a game the Friends’ School team won by 41-14. The Royal School, Dungannon points came through tries from Jack Girvan and Peter Busby with Jack adding both conversions.
Friends’ School scored tries through Joe Anderson, Max Gillespie, who touched down twice, Ethan Terris, Stuart Patterson, Michael Glass and Reece Malone. Reece was also successful with three conversion kicks.
Foyle and Londonderry College played City of Derry RFC U18s in a series of controlled games which proved valuable for the players and coaches involved with both teams.
Lurgan College recorded a 50-0 victory against Royal Belfast Academical Institution 3rdxv. Ryan Allen with two, Justin Burns, Harry Bird with two, Adam Black, Luke Forsythe and Josh Woods were the try scorers for the Lurgan College team. Harry Bird completed a fine personal performance with five successful conversion kicks.
Methodist College, Belfast entertained Enniskillen Royal Grammar School in a game the Methodist College team won by 29-10. The Methody team took an early 7-0 lead when Callum Davidson ran in for a try which he converted. Midway through the first half Aaron Crawford, the Enniskillen Royal Grammar school prop, touched down for an unconverted try to reduce the deficit to 7-5. Just before the break the Methody team extended their lead to 12-5 when Adam McNamee touched down for an unconverted try.
Ten minutes after the interval the Year 12 Methody winger, Jonny Riddell, scorched in for an unconverted try to see his team into a 17-5 lead. This became 22-5 when Callum Davidson touched down for an unconverted try going into the final quarter of the game. The Enniskillen RGS team then reduced their deficit to 22-10 when Stuart Brown touched down for an unconverted try. However, it was the Methodist College team that had the final say when their industrious prop, Matthew Hunter, touched down for a try, which was converted by Callum Davidson, to secure their 29-10 victory.
Portadown College hosted Banbridge Academy and Dromore High School in a tournament in which each game was played over 2×15 minute halves. Portadown College and Dromore High School drew their game 5-5 with Jay Lismore scoring the Portadown College try and Reuben Copes touching down for the Dromore High School try.
Banbridge Academy defeated Dromore High School by 31-5 with Adam Hanna scoring two tries and Ben Bradshaw, John McAlister and Ollie Norris each scoring one try. Philip Hayes was successful with three conversions.
Andrew Fisher scored an unconverted try for the Dromore High School team in the course of the game.
The Portadown College team defeated Banbridge Academy by 24-0 in the final game with Jay Lismore, Marshall Clint, Ethan Williamson and Joe Orr each scoring a try, two of which were converted by Adam Speers.
Rainey Endowed School hosted Regent House School in a game the Rainey Endowed School team won by 48-0. The impressive Rainey Endowed School team scored seven tries in the course of the game with Ben Brown scoring two, Mark Seffen, Jake McConnell, Abban McCloy and Max Millar each scoring one. The Rainey team also scored a penalty try. Daniel Barfoot was successful with four conversions as well as a penalty kick.
Royal Belfast Academical Institution played Belvedere College, Dublin and recorded an encouraging 8-7 victory against the Dublin team. Jude Postlethwaite scored an unconverted try with Jack Dickson kicking a penalty for the Royal Belfast Academical Institution team.
Royal School, Armagh played Bangor Grammar School in a game the Royal School, Armagh team won by 45-19. Sam Rainey, Ethan McAtarsney, James Agnew, Josh King, Jude Roberts, Jayson Denley and Matthew-Thomas Smith scored the Royal School, Armagh tries to which Ethan added five conversions.
The Bangor Grammar School points came through tries from Angus Christie, Riley Westwood and Lewis Hatty with Angus Christie adding two conversion kicks.
