Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Round Up Saturday 10th November 2018
There was one game played on Monday 5th November when Royal School, Dungannon travelled to the Mid Ulster Sports Arena in Cookstown Stadium where they played the Rainey Endowed School team. At the end of an exciting game it was the Rainey Endowed School team that emerged as 21-12 winners. The RS Dungannon team took advantage of a slow start from the Rainey team and took an early 12-0 lead following tries from Adam McFarland and Jordan Redmond, one of which was converted by Luke McMullan. Just before the break the Rainey ES team reduced their deficit to 12-7 when Jack Bresland touched down for a try which was converted by Jonathan Drennan.
The Rainey Endowed team dominated the second half for large periods of time. They took advantage of their control of the ball with a second try from Jack Bresland and one for Bryn Davies. Jonathan Drennan added both conversions to secure the 21-12 win for the Rainey Endowed School team.
The draw for the first round of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ 3rdxv Cup was made on Tuesday 6th November. The result of the draw is as follows:-

On Wednesday 7th November Limavady Grammar School played Omagh Academy in a game the Omagh Academy team won by 39-0. Jake McKay, Ryan Armstrong and Matthew Gillis each scored a try in the first half for the Omagh Academy team. Will Stewart added one conversion to see his team take a 17-0 lead into the interval.
The Omagh Academy team continued to dominate proceedings in the second half. Team captain, Robbie Sproule, led the way with a try; Adam Porter added another which was followed by a try from Rory Ritchie as well as a second from Matthew Gillis. One Will Stewart conversion sealed the 39-0 win for the Omagh Academy team.
The game involving Belfast High School and Banbridge Academy, which was re-scheduled to take place on Wednesday 7th November, was cancelled due to the prevailing weather conditions.
Wellington College, Belfast played Friends’ School, Lisburn 2ndxv in a game the Wellington College team won by 36-14. The Wellington College team scored six tries through Marcus Smyth, who touched down twice, Ton Stanfield, Chris Campbell, Adam Savage and Dylan O’Brien. Jake Hamilton was successful with three of the conversion kicks.
The Friends’ School, Lisburn 2ndxv points all came from Fergus McEwan who was playing his first game for a considerable period of time. Fergus ran in for two tries and converted them both.
On Friday 9th November the Royal School, Armagh team hosted Wallace High School at Armagh RFC. The Wallace High School team won the game by 10-3 after a titanic struggle played in horrendous conditions.
Charlie Worth struck a penalty to give the RS Armagh team an early 3-0 lead. The Wallace High School team struck back with an unconverted try from Daniel Kilpatrick to take a 5-3 lead into the break.
Both teams played well in the difficult conditions during the second half and it took an unconverted try from Jack Dillon to secure the 10-3 victory for the Wallace High School team.
Both teams would like to thank Armagh RFC for the provision of facilities and hosting the game.
On Saturday 10th November Ballyclare High School played Cambridge House Grammar School in a game the Ballyclare High School team won by 29-19. The Cambridge House team had taken a 19-12 lead into the break but the Ballyclare High School team controlled affairs in the second half.
Cambridge House opened the scoring with a try from Kane McIlroy, converted by Rory McCandless, to take a 7-0 lead. Ballyclare High School then scored a try through Jack Gamble, which was converted by Adam Clarke, to see the scoreboard read 7-7. A Josh Mark try, converted by Rory McCandless, saw the Cambridge House team into a 14-7 lead. Ballyclare then scored an unconverted try through Scott Martin to reduce their arrears to 14-12. Just before the break Andrew Wilson scored a try for Cambridge House, which was converted by Rory McCandless, to see the Cambridge House team into a 19-12 lead at half time.
Ballyclare High School recovered and three second half tries from Adam Clarke, Adam Campbell and Jack Purdy, one of which was converted by Adam Clarke, secured their 29-19 victory.
Both teams were delighted to have Alan McCourt, a young emerging referee, in charge of the game. Both sets of players really enjoyed the experience of playing the game under his control.
Belfast Royal Academy hosted Down High School in a closely contested game the Down High School team won by 23-19. Tom Stewart scored two tries for the Belfast Royal Academy team with Aaron Heatley touching down for a third. Harry Warke was successful with two conversions.
The Down High points came through tries from Stuart Campbell and Jonathan Graham as well as two successful conversions and three penalty kicks from Greg Hutley.
Dalriada School played Regent House School, a team that had toured in France over the half term break. In France the Regent House team played a Bergerac Regional xv in a game the Regent House team, despite losing the game by 21-7, put on a very committed performance. Matthew McFarland scored a try, which was converted by Stuart Martin, against the Bergerac Regional xv.
The Dalriada team won this game by 36-0 scoring six tries in the process. Paddy Steele touched down for a hat trick of tries with Luke Pollock, Paddy Carson and Peter Wright each scoring one try. Paddy Carson was successful with three of his conversion kicks.
Enniskillen Royal Grammar School hosted Coleraine Grammar School in a game the Enniskillen RGS team won by 19-8. Pierce Crowe opened the scoring for the Coleraine GS team with a well-struck penalty to give his team a 3-0 lead. This was extended to 8-0 when Conor Potts ran in for an unconverted try.
The Enniskillen Royal Grammar School displayed a great deal of bouncebackability and, with a workmanlike display after the initial setbacks; they ran in three tries, two of which were converted. Calum Smyton, Stuart Brown and Alex Parke scored the tries with Eddie Keys adding the two conversions.
Friends’ School, Lisburn 2ndxv played their second game of the week against a 1stxv and this time it was Carrickfergus Grammar School. The Carrickfergus GS team won the high scoring encounter by 41-19. Josh Irvine scored three tries for the Carrickfergus GS team with Liam Kaprigiannus-Green, Jack Dick, Josh Clements and Daniel Curley each scoring one try. Daniel was successful with three successful conversion kicks.
The Friends’ School 2ndxv team got some reward for their endeavours throughout the game with two tries from the impressive Fergus McEwan and one from their captain, Chris Kane. Joe Anderson added two conversions.
Grosvenor Grammar School played Campbell College, Belfast in a game the Campbell College team won by 33-13. The Grosvenor Grammar School points came from a Joseph McNaughton try which was converted by Adam Moore. Adam was also successful with two penalty kicks.
The Campbell College points through tries from Ollie Ralston, Adrian Maponga, Adam Russell, George Robinson and Peter Adeoye. Ollie Ralston added four conversions.
The Lurgan College v Royal School, Dungannon game was postponed due to flooded pitches and it is hoped the game will be re-scheduled in the coming weeks.
Methodist College, Belfast hosted Sullivan Upper School on the pristine Pirrie Park Paddock Pitch in a game the Methody team won by 52-3. The Sullivan team took an early 3-0 lead when Connor McKee converted a penalty opportunity but after that it was all Methodist College. Kevin McNaboe, Ethan McIlroy with two, Thomas Armstrong with two, Adam Reid with two and Robbie Armstrong all scored the Methody treies. Ethan McIlroy added the extras to six of the tries which secured the 52-3 victory for the Methodist College, Belfast team.
Rainey Endowed School hosted a hard working Dromore High School team in a game the Rainey Endowed School team won by 40-7. The Rainey team had built up a 26-0 lead by the interval with four tries from Karl Warner, Bryn Davies, Rory Bradley and Jonathan Drennan. Harry Evans added the extras to three of these tries.
The Dromore High School team displayed great commitment in the course of the second half but could little to prevent the rampant Rainey ES team scoring two more tries. Aidan McDonald and Ross Speers touched down for the tries and, with Harry Evans converting both, the Rainey Endowed School now had a 40-0 lead. However, the Dromore High School team did get some reward for their commitment when Sam Fairley scored a try, which Xander Lowham converted, to leave the final score reading Rainey Endowed School 40 Dromore High School 7
