On Wednesday 25th January Rainey Endowed School and Regent House School met once again-this time in their postponed Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup 3rd Round game. This game ended with another Rainey Endowed School victory-this time by 31-18. Playing with the breeze behind the Regent House team went into attack mode early in the game but found the Rainey Endowed defence unwilling to give anything away. A lovely break from David Dripps then opened up the Regent House defence. David found Karl Warner running a great support line and a clever pass put Karl in for the first try of the game. Adam Hunter added the extras to give the Rainey team a 7-0 lead. Regent House then responded with a Robbie Johnston penalty to reduce their deficit to 7-3. Adam Hunter then scored a try, which he converted, to put the Rainey Endowed School team into a 14-3 lead at the break.
This became 21-3 early in the second half when a fine team attack was finished off by Jack Breslin with a try which Adam Hunter converted. The Regent House team responded with an unconverted try from Robert Hull to reduce their arrears to 21-8. The Rainey Endowed School team then extended their lead to 28-8 when Todd Smyth benefited from a strong carry from Bryn Davis to power the Regent House line for a try. Adam Hunter added the conversion and, shortly afterwards, a penalty to put the Rainey team into an unassailable 31-8 lead. The Rainey Endowed team lost two players to “Yellow Cards” in the final few minutes of the game. The Regent House team took full advantage and ran in two unconverted tries through Robert Hull and Josh McFarland. These tries ensured the scoreboard read 31-18 in favour of the Rainey Endowed School team when the no-side whistle sounded.
The Rainey Endowed School team will travel to play Belfast Royal Academy in the 4th Round of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup.
The Regent House School will now host Coleraine Grammar School in the quarter-finals of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Bowl competition.
On the same afternoon the Coleraine Grammar School and Friends’ School, Lisburn teams met in the replay of their 3rd Round Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup game. Most observers would have expected a Coleraine Grammar School victory once the previous Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ 3rd Round game finished as a 10-10 draw in Lisburn. However, the Friends’ School team defied the odds by recording a narrow, but well-deserved, 9-6 win. The Coleraine GS team adopted a “route 1” approach to this game with their star players Peter Weisener, Matthew Mooney, Max Bailie and Daniel McCreadie all carrying strongly. The Friends’ School defence, well led by the outstanding Adam Milligan, was up to the task and the Lisburn team gave very little away. Their robust defence forced the Coleraine Grammar School team into conceding a number of first half penalties. Ben McCaughey converted three of these to give his team a 9-0 lead at the halftime break.
The Friends’ School team might have increased their lead in the second half only for good Coleraine defence to stop Bradley Mulholland and George Pringle just short of the whitewash on a number of occasions. The Coleraine Grammar School team was unable to create any real try scoring opportunities but did manage to gain a number of penalty kick opportunities. Ally Telfer was successful with two of these penalty kicks which left the final score reading 9-6 in favour of the Friends’ School, Lisburn team. The Friends’ School team will now host Grosvenor Grammar School in the 4th Round of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup.
