Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Round Up Saturday 21st October 2017
There was almost a full list of fixtures played on Saturday 21st October.
Ballymena Academy recorded a convincing 31-0 win against Sullivan Upper School. Stewart Moore, Mark Thompson, Ben Savage and Bruce Houston scored first half tries for the Ballymena Academy team. Bruce Houston added two conversions to give the home team a 24-0 lead by the interval.
The impressive Stewart Moore scored the only try in a shortened second half. Bruce Houston added the conversion to secure the 31-0 win for the Ballymena Academy team.
Bangor Grammar School hosted Campbell College, Belfast in a game the Campbell College team won by 20-0. The Campbell College team had built up a 15-0 lead by half time with John Harrison touching down for an unconverted try, Jamie Macartney scoring a try, which Conor Rankin converted, and Conor converting a penalty opportunity as well.
The second half saw the Bangor GS team coming more into the game. However, there was little they could to stop a James Johnston break which led to the Campbell College captain, John McKee, powering his way over the Bangor line to score an unconverted try which secured the 20-0 victory for the Campbell College team.
Carrickfergus Grammar School hosted a Grosvenor Grammar School team which won the entertaining encounter by 42-15. Ethan Fitzsimmons scored two tries for the Grosvenor team with Matthew Logan, James Lusty, Josh Malcolm and Jason Dowds each scoring one. Jason was successful with all six conversions. For James and Josh these tries were their first tries in senior rugby.
The Carrickfergus Grammar School points came through tries from Jack Leathem and David Doherty. Daniel Curley converted one try as well as a penalty kick.
The Coleraine Grammar School team had to work hard before overcoming a very determined Banbridge Academy team by 17-7. Andrew White, Graham Neill, and Ross Moore, who put in a “Man of the Match” performance, scored the Coleraine tries to which Pierce Crowe added one conversion.
The Banbridge Academy team, for whom Timmy Beattie and Andy Shannon excelled, scored their points through a try from Adam Hanna which was converted by Tom Flanagan.
The Dromore High School team was short quite a few regular players when they entertained Portadown College in a game the Portadown team won by 36-10. The Dromore points came through a Peter O’Connor try as well as a conversion and penalty from Reuben Cobb.
Portadown College scored their tries through Christopher Thornberry, Peter Douglas, Conor Webster, Drew Flack, Elliott McKew and Daniel Moorcroft. Adam Speers was successful with three conversions.
Enniskillen Royal Grammar School played Foyle and Londonderry College in a game the Enniskillen RGS team won by 53-0. The game was played in very difficult overhead and underfoot conditions but the home team still managed to score nine tries. Alex Parke scored a hat trick, Adam Boles and Alex Holder scored twice with Jonny Ervine and Jack Rutledge scoring once each. Reece Smyton added two conversions with Robbie Mills and Ewan Haire each converting one try.
Friends’ School, Lisburn hosted Belfast High School in a game the Friends’ School team won by 77-17. The Friends’ School team scored eleven tries through George Pringle, who scored four, Ross Stewart and Ross Gillespie, who scored two tries each, and Daniel Patterson, Luke Scofield and Ben McCaughey who touched down for one try each. Ben McCaughey was successful with all eleven conversion kicks.
The Belfast High School team scored three tries, one of which was converted, in the course of the game.
The Larne Grammar School team was to have hosted Antrim Grammar School but the game was cancelled.
Methodist College, Belfast hosted their rivals from Christian Brother’s College, Cork in a game the Cork team won by 24-21. The Methodist College points came through tries from Chris Larmour, Ben Gourley and Ben Crangle. Louis Lowry was successful with three conversions.
Royal Belfast Academical Institution played Down High School in a game the Belfast Inst team won by 38-18. Simon McMaster scored two tries for the Belfast Inst team with Jarid Wait, AJ Hussell, Max Preston and Brad McNamara each scoring one, Angus Adair was successful with four conversion kicks.
Alex Martin scored two tries for the Down High School team with Zac Fisher scoring a third. Greg Hutley was successful with one penalty kick.
Royal School, Armagh entertained Omagh Academy in a game the RS Armagh team won by 35-5. Callum Whiteside scored two tries for the RS Armagh team with Archie McAlpine, Aaron Woods and Jonny Agnew touching down for one try each. ZacThompson was successful with each of the five conversions.
The Omagh try came from Taine Lagan.
Royal School, Dungannon recorded a narrow, but well-deserved, 16-12 victory against Belfast Royal Academy when the teams met on the WK Armstrong pitch in Dungannon. Sustained early RS Dungannon pressure forced the Belfast Royal Academy team into conceding a penalty. A good interchange of play, involving both forwards and backs, provided Ben Nicholl with the opportunity to run in for a try under the posts. Luke McMullan added the extras to put the home side into a 7-0 lead which they held for the remainder of the first half.
Early in the second half Tom Stewart scored an unconverted try for the Belfast Royal Academy team which reduced the deficit to 7-5. Luke McMullan then kicked two penalties, as well as a drop goal, for the RS Dungannon team to put his team into a 16-5 lead. The Belfast Royal Academy team then scored another try through Tom Stewart which was converted by Harry Warke. However, this was a case of “too little, too late” for the visitors as the final whistle sounded leaving the Royal School, Dungannon team as 16-12 winners.
Wallace High School defeated Dalriada School by 14-0 when the teams met in Lisburn. The Wallace team scored two tries through Ben Carson and Tommy Lee Bradley. Nathan Doak was successful with both conversion kicks.
Wellington College, Belfast played a Grosvenor Grammar School “Select” xv in a game the Grosvenor team won by 24-7. The Wellington College points came through a Chris Nevin try which was converted by Jake Hamilton.
