Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Round Up Saturday 17th December 2016
There was one Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ 2ndxv Cup 2nd Round game played on Monday 12th December, the last of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ 2nd Round Medallion Shield games played on Tuesday 13th December, one Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ 2ndxv Cup 2nd Round game, as well as one Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ 3rdxv Plate 2nd Round game, played on Wednesday 14th December and one Ulster Schools’ friendly game played under lights on Friday 16th December in the lead up to one Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ 2ndxv Cup and one 3rdxv Plate game as well as a list of schoolboy friendly games played on Saturday 17th December.
In a Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ 2ndxv Plate 1st Round game played the previous weekend Larne Grammar School defeated Belfast High School by 22-3.
On Monday 12th Friends’ School, Lisburn 2nd xv played Campbell College 2ndxv in the 2nd Round of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ 2ndxv Cup. The Campbell College team won the game by 37-0.
On Tuesday 13th December Banbridge Academy hosted Carrickfergus College in the 2nd Round of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Medallion Shield. The Banbridge Academy team won this game by 50-0 and will now travel to play Dromore High School in the 3rd Round of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Medallion Shield. The Carrickfergus College team will have a bye into the quarter final stage of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Medallion Trophy.
On Wednesday 14th December Regent House School hosted Down High School in the 2nd Round of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ 2ndxv Cup. The Down High School team won the game by 45-3.
The Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ 3rdxv Plate 2nd Round game, featuring Campbell College, Belfast 3rdxv and Belfast Royal Academy 4thxv, took place on Wednesday 14th December. The Campbell College team won the game by 50-0. The Campbell College 3rdxv will now travel to play Portadown College 3rdxv in the quarter-final of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ 3rdxv Plate.
On Friday 16th December Lurgan College hosted Grosvenor Grammar School in a game played under the floodlights at Pollock Park, home of Lurgan Rugby Club. The Grosvenor GS team left it late to record a 10-5 win at the end of the game. Following a closely contested first half the Grosvenor GS team had built up a 3-0 lead by the interval through a Daniel Martin penalty.
The Lurgan College team took a 5-3 in the course of the second half when Reuben McCreery ran in for an unconverted try. With just minutes remaining Daniel Martin secured the 10-5 win for the Grosvenor Grammar School team when he ran in for a try, which he converted.
Both schools would like to thank Lurgan RFC for the provision of facilities and hosting the game.

In the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ 2ndxv Cup 2nd Round Lurgan College played Royal School, Dungannon in a game the Royal School, Dungannon team won by 22-0. Cameron Steenson, Lewis Connolly and Gideon Dilworth scored the tries for the RS Dungannon team with Matthew Smyth adding two conversions as well as a penalty.
In the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ 3rdxv Plate 2nd Round game Ballymena Academy 3rdxv hosted Sullivan Upper School 3rdxv in a game the Ballymena Academy team won by 24-7. The Ballymena Academy team will now travel to play Banbridge Academy 3rdxv in the quarter-final of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ 3rdxv Plate.
There were eight schoolboy friendly games played on Saturday 17th December.
Coleraine Grammar School hosted Ballyclare High School in a game the Ballyclare HS team won by 17-8. Coleraine GS kicked a penalty through Ally Telfer to take a 3-0 lead. The Ballyclare High School team responded with an unconverted try from Davy Crockett to see his team into a 5-3 lead at the break.
In the second half James Nelson scored an unconverted try for the Ballyclare team to see them into a 10-3 lead. Jake McVicker then scored a real captain’s try for the visitors and, with Adam Clarke adding the conversion, the Ballyclare High School team had secured a 17-3 lead. With the last play of the game Peter Weisener scored an unconverted try for the Coleraine Grammar School team. This ensured the Ballyclare High School team finished the game as 17-8 winners.
Belfast Royal Academy hosted the Royal School, Armagh team in a game the Belfast Royal Academy team won by 15-13. The BRA team took an early 3-0 lead but Glen Faloon then added a long range penalty after BRA were adjudged to have been offside to draw the scores level at 3-3. The home side responded with an unconverted try from Jack Burton to put the BRA team into an 8-3 lead. Matthew Reaney then put Chris Jennings through a gap and the hosts scrambled to tackle the full back but, from the breakdown, the home side was adjudged offside again and Glen Faloon kicked a penalty to reduce the arrears to 8-6.
Nick Jennings scored a try early in the second half, which Glen Faloon converted, to see the Royal School, Armagh team into a 13-8 lead. Armagh indiscipline then allowed BRA to work their way into the visitors 22m area. They made the pressure count when Conor McAuley scored a try in the corner, which he converted, to secure the hard earned 15-13 victory for the Belfast Royal Academy team.
Antrim Grammar School travelled to play Carrickfergus Grammar School team and returned home having recorded a 31-3 win. The Antrim Grammar School points came through two tries from JJ McKee, one try from Dylan McGreevey, one try from Niall Lawrence and one try from Callum McCombe. Callum Hull added two conversions with Ben McKnight adding one.
Daniel Curley was successful with a penalty kick for the Carrickfergus Grammar School team.
Down High School recorded a convincing 34-7 win against an injury hit Royal School, Dungannon team. Down High School had built up a 19-3 lead by the interval through tries from Robin Wilson, Claytan Milligan and Zac Ward, two of which were converted by Lewis Finlay. The RS Dungannon points came from an Adam Evans try which he successfully converted.
In the second half the Down High School team scored tries through Ronan Patterson, a second from Claytan Milligan and one from Lewis Finlay which secured the 34-7 victory for the Down High School team.
Enniskillen Royal Grammar School hosted Omagh Academy in a game the Omagh Academy team won by 17-5. Oscar Nelson opened the scoring for the Omagh Academy team when he took advantage of good work from Daniel Ritchie to touch down for a try. Kyle Beattie added the extras to put the Omagh Academy team into a 7-0 lead. The Enniskillen RGS team responded with an unconverted try from Dylan Crawford to leave the visitors with a 7-5 lead at the break.
The Omagh team took the initiative at the start of the second half and, once again, good work from Daniel Nelson enabled Oscar Nelson to run in for his second try of the game. The conversion was unsuccessful but the Omagh Academy team now had a 12-5 lead. Glenn McKinley then displayed great handling skills to send James Longwell in for an unconverted try which secured the 17-5 victory for the Omagh Academy team.
Friends’ School, Lisburn played Campbell College, Belfast in a game the Campbell College team won by 29-7. Ben Webb, Rex Tinsley, Jamie Clarke and Ben Power all scored tries for the Campbell College team with Ben Power adding one penalty and three conversions.
Ben McCaughey scored a try, which he converted, for the Friends’ School, Lisburn team.
Rainey Endowed School got back to winning ways when they defeated Sullivan Upper School team by 20-17. Adam Hunter scored two tries for the Rainey Endowed School team with Aaron Hamilton adding a third. Adam Hunter also kicked one conversion as well as a penalty.
The Sullivan Upper scores came from a Ruairi Meharg try, a Rory Jemphrey try with two conversions and a penalty from Rory Kilpatrick.
The “Match of the Day” was played at Wallace High School when Royal Belfast Academical Institution were the visitors. The Belfast Inst team won the game by 19-10 but had to battle hard for the win. The visitors had opened up a 10-3 by half time through unconverted tries from Zac Davidson and James Hume. Matthew Pentland was successful with a first half penalty for the Wallace High School team.
The Belfast Inst team spent long periods of the second half in attack mode but good Wallace High School defence ensured the Wallace HS line remained intact. However, James Hume was able to convert three penalty opportunities to put the Belfast Inst team into a 19-3 lead. Near the end of the game the Wallace High School team received some reward for their endeavours when Gary Dillon touched down for a try, following a surging run, close to the Royal Belfast Academical Institution posts. Matthew Pentland added the extras to leave the scoreboard reading 19-10 in favour of the Royal Belfast Academical Institution team at the end of the game.
