Useful squad training encounter with senior opposition.

A large Cooke squad took the opportunity to test fitness and skills levels in a practice match against Banbridge at Rifle Park last night, with Jody and Tom being named 1st XV captain and vice captain respectively. Two natural leaders and well respected rugby players. Well done guys!

A lengthy warm up was extended significantly when a replacement referee had to be organised but this did not dampen the enthusiasm of either team when the match started. Banbridge showed no intentions of taking things easy against their Qualifying One opponents and demonstrated superior physical presence in the opening exchanges.

Cooke had several absences in key positions but coach Ward was keen to experiment – placing a variety of players in unfamiliar roles. Players from last year’s seconds and thirds were also given opportunity to compete against the AIL side and, to a man, put in very commendable performances.

Interest amongst the Cooke support was focussed on our newcomers and they were not disappointed. McLaughlin and Pyper had solid games in the mid field with Dewhurst prominent in the pack.

With the pre-arranged 4 quarters played, coach Ward sought better value and insisted on a 5th quarter – which lasted half an hour! For the sad alikadoos who were keeping score, the evening ended in a rather flattering try count of 8:1 in favour of Banbridge – the ever present vice-captain Frazer taking the honours for Cooke following a maul close to the Banbridge line.

This was an invaluable exercise in the lead up to the opening league game against Limavady. Ward commented that the most pleasing aspect of the evening was the positive attitude and commitment displayed by every member of the squad.
