Dunmurry Golf Club was the venue when Cooke RFC hosted Coleraine RFC for the annual ‘Hurricane Cup.’
This year the event was tinged with sadness as Norman Ogilvie, the injured player from the 1982 Foster Cup final between the two clubs, had passed away a few months ago.

Cooke fielded a strong team with the usual blend of ‘youth’ and ability!
First out for Cooke was the competitive pairing of Trevor Lamont and Neil Forsythe. The ebullient Trevor gained revenge over Coleraine V.P. Norman Blair for last year’s defeat. Brian Mitchell and Stephen Elliott were much too consistent for their Coleraine opponents and Cooke went two matches up.
The battle worn pairing of Ray Black and John McClune had the ‘assistance’ of caddie Ian Brush. When asked if Ian could read the green, Ray replied, ‘He couldn’t read the Beano!’
When asked, ‘Where did that one go Ray?’ the reply was ‘Sorry Amigo, I was lighting a fag!’
The youthful Coleraine pairing had plenty of laughs as well at this point.
President Trevor Barton and Jonny Merser failed to bring home a point. Learned Council Mercer is preparing the President’s defence.
Rookie Peter Elliott and Roy Johnston put Cooke back on track with Peter taking the lead role with some sparkling golf over the first nine holes.
Rear gunners Vinod Tandon and the evergreen Mick English, playing on their home course, were on fine form and produced the best better-ball score of the day beating the formidable Coleraine pairing of ex Ulster scrum half Alister Campbell and the flamboyant past president, Denis McCrum.
Final score 4-2 to Cooke and the first cup of the season for President Trevor Barton.
Many thanks to Trevor Lamont and to Dunmurry Golf Club for the use of the course and for the excellent food and drinks.
We look forward to the return match at Coleraine next year.
