2017 is a huge year for Glen Moray as the brand celebrates 120 years of production at its Elgin distillery.
Remarkably, in all that time, there have been only five managers at the distillery in the heart of Speyside. The current Master Distiller, Graham Coull, who took over in 2005, says he’s honoured to be at the helm in such an important year for Glen Moray. He said: “It’s a privilege to be leading our team into this year of celebrations and I feel very proud to be following in the footsteps of our previous distillery managers – all men who made Glen Moray great. Each and every one of us appreciates Glen Moray’s rich heritage and we have a huge respect for the traditions laid down 120 years ago. By combining age-old methods with modern techniques, we believe we have struck the perfect balance to preserve Glen Moray’s standing among the best of the Speyside Single Malts.”
The site of the current Glen Moray Distillery was originally the Elgin West Brewery, which opened in 1830, and produced several local ales up until almost the turn of the 19th century. On January 27, 1897, the Glen Moray Glenlivet Distillery Company Ltd was formed and later that year, on September 13, the very first drop of spirit ran from copper stills on the site. This new-make spirit was filled into a wide variety of casks, an unusual practice for the time. It’s a tradition that continues today – Glen Moray matures in onsite warehouses in everything from sherry and chardonnay to port casks, producing an intricate spectrum of flavours.
A Whisky Beyond Compare.
Only a whisky of true distinction would be worthy of celebrating Glen Moray’s 120 years of excellence. In May 2017, Master Distiller Graham Coull releases ‘Mastery’ – a special release hand-picked from five distinctive vintages.
