Ophir 17 – 57 Civil Service

Service plough on against Ophir at mucky Mallusk
by Michael Curran

Service Colts showed how much they have improved from the start of the season with a 57 to 17 win away to Ophir

Ophir’s ground at Mallusk had suffered as much as any to the weather in recent weeks and although it was soft in parts it was good enough for a much anticipated return match with the Service boys wanting to avenge their opening match of the season defeat to the hosts.
Unfortunately the Ophir coach was crocked so yours truly had to take charge a task made slightly more difficult as I had left my boots at home.
Anyways the Service boys didn’t let this put them off and early tries from Rory Lynn (2) and Ryan Thompson (2) gave them confidence against a useful Ophir side who scrummaged, rucked and mauled extremely well and were rewarded with a try of their own.
However Service kept the pressure on with another try from Rory and then one from Connor Crutchley.
Not to be undone by his brother Joe Crutchley crossed the line, quickly followed by Kai Smyth scoring a much deserved first try of the season.
Soon after Ben Watson embarked on a mazy run from the Ophir 10 metre line to score.
Rory landed 5 conversions with Josh determined to get on the scoresheet landing a difficult one from in front of the posts.
Ophir certainly didn’t give up and scored a further two tries themselves.
From a Service point of view it was pleasing that despite the conditions the boys tried to play rugby and moved the ball through the hands well on occasions resulting in the backs scoring five of the tries.
Special mention goes to Peter and Tiernan playing their debut matches today and showing a lot of skill and grit. Great for them to start off with a win.
Many thanks to all who helped with lifts and for their support. Thanks to Pat Magee for being the photographer. Thanks to Ryan McKeown for being the match reporter – sorry I didn’t get you on for longer.
And thanks to Mattie Hamilton for coming up – your rucking and mauling was missed today – get fit again soon!
