Service opened their Kukri Qualifying 4 League campaign with a 0 – 12 points
away win to Cavan on Saturday. The visitors had to repulse a ferocious
onslaught from their hosts as they waited for the ‘journey time’ to get out
of their legs.

On 15 minutes, Dan Cartland opened the scoring for Service with a well taken
try after a Peter Hoskins mazy run took him to within feet of the Cavan try
line before being felled with a last gasp ankle tap. Hoskins was able to
offload to the supporting Cartland before going on to convert the score
himself.
In the second half, a well worked move in the lineout, saw the powerful
Brendan Smith, take a clever ball from hooker Jonny Cartwright, which
allowed the burly prop to crash over the line for an unconverted try.
This was a very tough opener for the East Belfast side and so far away from
home, but they showed true grit and determination to come away with two
valuable league points in the bag.
A joint Man of the Match, was awarded to Trevor McDowell at tight head and
Matthew Robinson at open side flanker, for their fantastic work rate and
commitment throughout the game.
