horseracing, from £16.50 to £95. Keen racegoers, amateur riders and pony-mad children alike will relish the opportunity to go behind-the-scenes of a number of iconic racing venues including a

personal stories. Many of the experiences can be upgraded to a private tour on a date that best suits the recipient, by adding a one-off supplement.

Newmarket has been linked with horseracing since Charles II introduced the first ever recorded race there in 1622. Today the town remains the largest racehorse training centre in Britain,
home to the world-famous Jockey Club, whose rooms are the epitome of Georgian elegance, and bedecked with equine masterpieces spanning the centuries.

On offer is a range of fascinating behind-the-scenes, equine experiences that include:

* The Newmarket Experience [4] is a half-day tour, ideal for those who want to find out more about what it takes to train racehorses. Spend a morning watching some of Newmarket’s 3,000 equine
residents go about their morning exercise on the famed gallops and then go behind the scenes at a racing yard. Discover a little of Newmarket’s history and see the stallions, mare, and foals at the
National Stud, as well as retired National Hunt legend, Lord Windermere. Morning coffee and cake is included, and tours are available on alternate Fridays throughout the year for £65 per person.

* The Ultimate Newmarket Experience [5] – This full day allows visitors to really get behind the scenes at the home of horseracing. Spend time on the famous Newmarket training grounds watching horses out on the gallops. Learn about the history of Warren Hill and the links to the Royal family. Visit a racing yard, hearing about the daily routines and meeting some of the people who make it all happen. Find out about the history and role of the 500-acre National Stud farm, see the stallions including Stradivarius and meet some of the mares and foals, as well as retired racing legends. Then visit the impressive National Horseracing Museum where lunch is taken and spend the afternoon exploring this 5-acre site. Christmas party fashion: experts reveal the most trending looks for 2023 to exude confidence

It’s that time of year again when office Christmas parties are in full swing, and now is the perfect time to start preparing for the occasion.

Fashion experts at Boohoo have analyzed Google data to reveal the most trending looks this season and how you can style them to ensure you feel confident at your Christmas party.

Bring fun to the party with sparkle
Confidence begins before you step into the room – don’t forget to check the dress code and leave plenty of time to choose your attire. Dressing in something sparkly or sequinned is a fun way to stand out from the crowd and channel the Christmas spirit; you simply can’t go wrong with these choices, and the rest of the world appears to agree, with a 32% increase in worldwide Google searches for ‘sequin dress’ over the last 90 days. Pair this with sparkly earrings while keeping the heels simple to draw the crowd’s attention to the dress, the true showstopper.

Embrace texture this Christmas
Texture is hot this season, from lace to satin – and it’s a fun way to liven up your style and feel confident. The list continues with anything tasselled, feathered, and ruffled being on-trend right now, and Google searches for ‘ruffle sleeves’ have exploded by 89% across the globe in the last 90 days. Pair these looks with simple gold or silver jewelry to make a statement while you dance the night away – even if you’re not feeling your most confident, your bold outfit will exude a confident energy. As the saying goes, fake it until you make it!

Elevate your look with this season’s trending color
Alternatively, if you prefer a more understated outfit, try a monochromatic look with bold makeup for an easy confidence boost. Red is the color of the season this year, and with worldwide searches for ‘cherry red lipstick’ rocketing by 226% in the past 90 days, be sure not to miss out on this trend. If red lipstick is not for you, try a cherry red blush to make your cheeks pop and give you that radiant glow; remember to use lip liner and setting spray to ensure that you’re camera-ready on the night.

Carry the essentials with confidence
A handbag is a must to complete your look for the Christmas party while boosting your confidence with peace of mind that you have all the essentials. Bring makeup brushes and lipstick to perfect your look in between eating, drinking and dancing, as well as some perfume to keep heads turning. These extra items will ensure that you feel confident and prepared throughout the Christmas party while your handbag adds the final touch to your outfit.

Worldwide searches for ‘red shoulder bag’ have soared by 81% in the past 90 days, giving you the perfect opportunity to coordinate some elements within your outfit. Similarly, if you choose a sparkly or sequinned number as your outfit, then go for a matching bag to complete your look – ‘sparkly bag’ searches have increased by a significant 44% worldwide over the past 90 days on Google, highlighting its popularity this party season.

Step Into Christmas with this season’s trending shoes
Boots are a timeless footwear piece in everyone’s wardrobe – and this season, ‘heeled boots’ are particularly on-trend, with searches exploding by 52% worldwide in the past 90 days. Black-heeled boots are the perfect option to go with any outfit to add a touch of elegance – just remember to bring some more comfortable shoes to dance in as the night goes on, just in case!

If you’re not a heels lover, why not join the ballet flats trend? On TikTok, #balletflats has seen a staggering 184 million views in the US – this stylish alternative will go with any outfit, and you could even opt for a bold shade to add a burst of color to your look this holiday season.

Getting into the party spirit
The process of getting glammed up and ready is crucial to ensure that you feel confident on the night of your office Christmas party. Listen to your favorite playlist and enjoy a drink to hype yourself up; you could even take some photos and send them to your friends to show them your look, and they will inevitably give you some confidence-boosting compliments before your night begins. And finally, always enter the room with a smile and enjoy yourself!

A spokesperson from Boohoo has commented: “Everyone’s office Christmas party is an anticipated event, so it’s important to plan your look to feel your most confident and stylish on the night.”

“Using Google data to find this season’s hottest trends means that you can make a statement this holiday and certainly elevate the party mood. This guide can offer inspiration for making this festive celebration the best night of the year while looking flawless.”

The traditional Christmas wish list has been dusted off by neat freak Brits, who have named cleaning products as the number one present they want to receive this year, according to new research released today.

Staggeringly, more than half (58%) of people have cleaning products such as air fresheners, microfibre cloths and stain remover on their list of most coveted items this Christmas.

That figure rises to an enormous 93% among millennials aged 18-24 in a trend thought to have been sparked by ‘clean-fluencers’ – social media stars who garner millions of followers by posting cleaning tips, tricks and hacks.

The study1 from Dr. Beckmann found the craziness of the Christmas period is contributing to this rising demand for cleaning products, with over two in five (42%) people saying their home is more messy and disorganised amid the festivities.

On Christmas Day, more than a third of Brits (36%) say red and mulled wine spills are most likely to cause stains, closely followed by gravy splatters (26%) and grease from the Christmas cooking (25%).

As a result, Dr. Beckmann’s Upholstery Stain Remover, which tackles the toughest of red wine spills, is expected to be a popular stocking filler this year.

While getting the house in sparkling condition is a top priority for many, it’s also a time-consuming task, with almost half (49%) of people spending upwards of three hours deep cleaning the home in preparation for the big day.

With Christmas just around the corner, Dr. Beckmann is helping people tackle any stain that the festive period throws their way with a range of effective cleaning products, from carpet and upholstery cleaners to dedicated stain removers.

Chloe Baker, Dr. Beckmann spokesperson, said: “While Christmas is one of the jolliest times of the year, many people struggle to keep their home clean and organised during the festive rush.

“Whether people have a mountain of decorations that have collected dust or want to give their home a deep clean before the guests arrive, getting on top of cleaning can be a mammoth task.

“At Dr. Beckmann, we understand this challenge and we’re committed to providing effective and efficient cleaning solutions that ease the burden of holiday cleaning.

“We’re ready to support households across the country with our range of fast-acting cleaning products, ensuring homes remain fresh and immaculate throughout the holidays and beyond, while also making good stocking fillers for all those cleaning fans out there!”

How to make amazing Christmas gift dreams come true – on a budget

It might be the most wonderful time of the year – but it can also be stressful with loved ones asking for expensive gifts in a cost-of-living crisis. Whether it’s a teenager dreaming of a gamer’s paradise, or a little one with aspirations of outdoor exploration, it can be difficult to keep up with the budget that comes with the longed-for presents.
But now MyBuilder.com, the reliable way for homeowners to hire tradespeople, has come up with some ways to turn those aspirational gift ideas into reality – for just a fraction of the cost.
Andy Simms, trade expert from MyBuilder.com, said that by buying second hand, or looking into home hacks, you can create the magic of Christmas without breaking the bank – or your back.
“With the rise in popularity of Facebook Marketplace and Vinted, there has never been a better time to source products second-hand – and then get a professional in to upcycle, rebuild, or improve what you’re able to get.
“Whether it be that dream fairy princess bed, a teenager’s secret garden room, or a treehouse straight out of the enchanted forest – so much can be achieved by reusing, rebuilding, and recycling!
“It takes a little more time and creativity, but the results can be incredible – and it’s good for the planet, too.”
Here’s MyBuilder.com’s guide to the best way to create those amazing gift requests this Christmas.

Climbing wall – £250
For those kids who love to climb all over your furniture, why not create them a bespoke climbing wall? This sounds expensive, but actually this can be safely and for less money than you may expect. A pack of 50 grip climbing stones can cost just £40 and these can be fit on your walls or, if your child wants a challenge, all up the wall next to your stairs (a tradesperson can advice on the suitability of walls!). A handyperson could help secure your grips to the wall and create an amazing climbing space in your home for just £200.
Skate park – £470
A skateboard or scooter is a great gift – but what about a custom half-pipe to go with it? While this might sound aspirational, a carpenter or handyperson could craft a plywood ramp for less than you may expect. Make your kid the envy of their friends – and all in just a day’s work by a professional.
Private gaming room – £500
Many teenagers will be asking for a new games console this Christmas, but what about creating a special space for them to enjoy it? Hanging a TV on the wall, fitting LED lights and installing soundproofing in their bedroom will cost you less than £500, and will take a tradesperson less than a couple of days to install.
Bargain Wendy House – £240
A double-storey wendy house with a picket fence can be a dream for many kids out there – but they come with a hefty four-figure price tag. However, huge amounts are being given away online, often for free. The catch? The “buyer” needs to dismantle themselves. The great news here is that a tradesperson can do this for you, and rebuild it, for just a couple of hundred pounds for the day’s work.
Second-hand treehouse – £500
Many people whose kids have outgrown their treehouse are looking to move it along – often for free if the purchaser will dismantle it themselves. Similar to a wendy house, obtaining a treehouse second-hand and employing someone to dismantle and rebuild will cost a fraction of the price.
Sunken trampolines – £250
Trampolines are a favourite for all ages – but they can be pretty unsightly to look at. Why not reuse your trampoline and give you and your kids a present by making them into a sunken version. A lot more sophisticated and will give your bouncer a more grown-up appeal – as well as making it safer. Your tradesperson will need to dig out the space, ready to fit your trampoline into the ground securely. All for just £250 a couple of days’ work.

The cost of the modern-day Christmas stocking is set to soar this year, as parents favour tech and beauty products ahead of traditional stocking fillers, new national research reveals1.

The study, conducted by Ryman, revealed tech products (93%) are set to be the number one present this Christmas, meaning parents will be forced to splurge the cash to treat their loved ones over the festive period.

Research revealed the cost of the Christmas stocking is now nearly twice that of when parents received their own as a child, with Brits expecting to pay an average of £58.64 for stocking fillers, compared to £33.56 for the previous generation.

However, seven in 10 (70%) deem this too much, stating Brits are now ‘overspending’ on the festive staple, with two thirds (66%) of respondents citing the cost-of-living crisis as affecting the amount they will spend on presents this year.

This is reinforced with over half the nation (51%) expected to pay the same, if not more, on stocking filler presents as main presents under the tree.

Alongside tech products, sweets and chocolates (71%), toys and books (53%), socks (41%), stationery (32%) and beauty products (27%) are also expected to be this year’s most popular gifts.

Chloe Danskin, Head of Marketing at Ryman, said: “Christmas is often the most costly time of the year for families, especially with the wide range of items kids are asking Santa for these days.

“Our study revealed 14 is the average age parents stop buying stocking presents for their children, but as many as four in 10 parents said they will always buy their child a stocking, so it’s easy to see how the pounds add up!

“Our range of stocking fillers comprise a wide variety of products to suit all budgets, from teddies to toys and tech to stationery, there’s plenty to bulk out that stocking to ensure the kids don’t go disappointed this festive season.”

Regionally, parents in the North East are expected for fork out the most for stocking fillers this Christmas (£84.98), whereas at the opposite end of the scale, parents in the South West are looking to spend just £47.89.

TOP FIVE REGIONS FOR MOST EXPENSIVE CHRISTMAS STOCKING TOP FIVE REGIONS FOR CHEAPEST CHRISTMAS STOCKING
NORTH EAST – £84.98 SOUTH WEST – £47.89

Experts reveal how long it will take you to burn off your Christmas dinner, plus the exercises to do so

The Christmas period has arrived, and Brits across the nation are undoubtedly excited for the day of drinking and eating well. However, it’s no secret that the abundance of food will take quite some time to burn off – but how long can you expect?

Experts at Mirafit have analysed the calorie intake of traditional Christmas dinner foods to highlight the exercises you need to burn them and how much time it will take you.

Starters and nibbles

To tie you over as you await your Christmas dinner, you may indulge in traditional starters such as smoked salmon while also treating yourself to some cheese and crackers. In total, these nibbles contain 280 calories – women will have to take a walk for 58 minutes to burn this off, or for men, 49 minutes.

With the free time you may have over the Christmas break, you can use this low-intensity exercise as a way to socialise – invite friends or family on your walk and pick a scenic route to make the exercise more enjoyable.

If you’d like to fly solo while you burn the calories, head out on your own, or even take advantage of the treadmill at your gym – this way, you needn’t worry about the cold.

Turkey dinner & all the trimmings

The Christmas dinner racks up 1,499 calories, including the turkey with all the trimmings, so expect vigorous exercise to burn this off. Running burns more calories than any other exercise, so this is the most practical option – women will need to run for 2 hours and 1 minute, and men will need to aim for 1 hour and 42 minutes.

Running for a long period of time may be impractical, especially if this isn’t one of your typical workouts. Spread the exercise over a few days, or you could even do so over a week; with the latter, you can incorporate other exercises into the same workout, like strength training.

If you opt for an outside run instead of a treadmill, wear bright colours to stay visible to drivers when it’s dark. On top of this, muscles become tighter and more injury-prone in winter due to muscles contracting to conserve heat, so it’s vital to stretch properly before your run.

Desserts to finish the feast

While you may be stuffed after your dinner, the feast isn’t over until you’ve had dessert. With a taster of traditional desserts, including Christmas pudding, yule log, and mince pies, you’re looking at a sum of 1,172 calories; that’s an overwhelming 4 hours and 22 minutes of weightlifting for men, or 5 hours and 10 minutes for women.

While it’s unrealistic to commit to this length of exercise in one day, it’s certainly feasible to spread it out over a week. Spending just over an hour for four days, or five days for women, is sure to burn the calories you consumed from Christmas day desserts. Alternate between upper and lower body workouts to ensure you’re targeting all areas while simultaneously allowing muscles to recover.

The overhead press is a great exercise to target your shoulders and triceps; here, you need to stand with a straight back, hold dumbbells with an overhand grip at shoulder height, and raise them above your head before bringing them back until your arms are straight. As well as this, try a bicep curl by holding a dumbbell with your hand facing the sky, slowly curling this up by bending your elbow, and then slowly lowering the weight back down again.

For your lower body, try walking lunges – use either dumbbells or a barbell and repeatedly take steps forward by bending your leg until your thigh is parallel to the floor, remembering to alternate your legs for each lunge. In addition, incorporate deadlifts into your lower body workout; with your feet shoulder-width apart, hold dumbbells on both sides of your legs with your arms straight and push your hips back as you lower the dumbbells. Bring them back up slowly as you move your hips forward, and repeat!

Drinks to celebrate the festivities

It wouldn’t be Christmas day without mulled wine, eggnog, and even a couple of glasses of classic wine – but altogether, the combination of these drinks equates to 1,008 calories. To burn this off, women must aim for 1 hour and 24 minutes of cycling, while men must complete 1 hour and 11 minutes.

Cycling can be an excellent way for the family to get together over the Christmas period. If you wish to burn all those calories in one day, pick a route with a pit stop halfway through to grab a drink or a bite to eat.

On the other hand, if you’d rather not face the cold, you can use stationary bikes at the gym and spread the workout over two or three days. With this equipment, you can alter the intensity, resistance, and speed, and they’re a fantastic option for those with joint pain.

Mica Moore from Mirafit has commented: “Christmas day is just around the corner, and it’s an exciting time to gather with loved ones and celebrate with delicious food and drinks. While it’s clear that the calorie intake on Christmas day is incredibly high, with 3,959 in total, it’s one day of the year when we can forget the diet and fitness goals.

“However, fitness enthusiasts may be determined to stay in good shape despite the high-calorie consumption, so these exercise tips can guide you to help you stay on track, from upper and lower body workouts to taking a walk with the family.”

This information was provided by Mirafit, fitness equipment providers who strive to improve accessibility and encourage participation.

Belfast and Armagh among the worst U.K. cities for a festive night out

• Armagh and Belfast are officially in the top ten the worst cities for night out this Christmas and New Year’s Eve, according to new a new study. London, Newry, Carlisle, and Colchester round out the top five U.K. cities.
• The study considered multiple factors, including the average cost of a pint and the number of pubs per location, to determine the best U.K. cities for nightlife leading up to the party season.
New data has revealed the top ten worst cities for a night out in the U.K.
The study, conducted by online casino Casibella.com analysed data on the number of bars and clubs, the number of pubs, the average cost of a pint, the average cost of a takeaway and safety scores for walking alone at night to determine the worst, most unsafe and least affordable cities for partygoers in the U.K.
London takes the crown as the worst city for a festive night out in the U.K. England’s capital may be bursting with life and culture, but the study has found that there are only 13 bars and clubs per 100,000 people to choose from and a pint is £6.35 on average. Unsurprisingly, London also has a low safety score at 39/100, according to people who have visited. These factors count towards a final score of 26.39/100.
Newry is the second-worst city for nightlife at Christmas and New Year’s Eve with a final score of 37.82/100. Located in Northern Ireland, the cathedral city’s nature parks and museums warrant a visit. However, while a pint costs only £3.75 on average, there is only 1 bar and club per 100,000 people ready to entertain partygoers, the lowest number in the study.
Carlisle takes the bronze medal. Nestled in the North West of England, Carlisle is close to both the Scottish boarder and the stunning Lake District. The cathedral city’s nightlife, however, is one of the worst in the nation. With only 18 pubs per 100,000 people and the average price of a McDonald’s meal costing £8.50, the city comes in third place with a final score of 38.36/100.
In fourth place is Armagh. Home to the seat of the Archbishops of Armagh, the cathedral city is filled with religious and cultural history in Northern Ireland. However, with only 2 bars and clubs to visit per 100,000 people and a low safety score of 38/100, Armagh is in the top ten worst cities for nightlife with a final score of 41.11/100.
Colchester, a newly appointed city located in the South East of England, is the fifth worst city for nightlife. The study has found that the average price of a McDonald’s meal is £8, the city has a safety score of 37/100 and a final score of 41.53/100.
Dundee ranks in sixth place with a final score of 41.92/100. Scotland’s fourth-largest city has 20 bars and clubs per 100,000 people to visit, the average cost of a McDonald’s meal is £8 and the average cost of a pint is £4.
Southend-on-Sea, with a final score of 42.35/100, is the seventh worst city for nightlife in the U.K. This is followed by Coventry in eighth place with a final score of 43.41/100 and Belfast in ninth with a final score of 43.44/100. Exeter, with a final score of 44.27/100, is the tenth worst city for nightlife in the U.K.
A spokesperson from Casibella.com has commented on the study: “London is officially the worst city for a night out in the nation when considering several factors; including the number of bars, pubs and clubs to visit with friends because there is not enough nightlife to accommodate its huge population of 9.6 million. It is interesting that other cities in the study, from Armagh to Carlisle, are notably smaller and scattered across the nation; this suggests that the quality of nightlife does not depend on the size of a city and can fluctuate around England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.”

NEW STUDY REVEALS DECEMBER 16TH AS THE IDEAL DEADLINE TO BUY YOUR CHRISTMAS PRESENTS, BASED ON SHIPPING TIMES

With the holidays approaching, many have already started thinking about the perfect presents for their family and friends. Millions of people will do at least some of their Christmas shopping online, but with less than a month to go before the big day – how much time have they got to browse to ensure their deliveries arrive on time?
To help with this, a new study by Ubuy Switzerland has discovered that December 16th is the latest date to buy your presents to receive them before Christmas day.
The study compared average shipping time from well-known online shops such as Disney Store, Sephora, Pandora and more to calculate the ultimate deadline for ordering Christmas presents.
While some shops like Nespresso, Douglas and Ugg have fairly fast standard shipping of 2 to 4 business days, others such as Etsy, Nordstrom and JD Sport have longer waiting times (between 10 to 20 working days), meaning shoppers need to think ahead to make sure they have all their perfectly packed gifts underneath the tree on December 25th.
A spokesperson for Ubuy Switzerland commented on the findings:
“As we all know, finding the perfect present for our loved ones can be both thrilling and challenging. However, one key to ensuring a stress-free and joyful Christmas is to plan ahead, especially when it comes to online shopping.
“In today’s fast-paced world, the convenience of ordering gifts online cannot be overstated. From unique handcrafted items to the latest gadgets, the internet provides many options that cater to every taste. But, and it’s a big but, the key is to order in time to avoid any last-minute chaos.
“The holiday rush can lead to shipping delays and items going out of stock, making it crucial to plan your online purchases well in advance. By placing your orders early, you not only secure the gifts you have in mind but also ensure they arrive on your doorstep in time for the big day. It’s the perfect way to beat the holiday hustle and bustle, allowing you to relax and savour the festive moments with your loved ones.”

Southern Light Belies Darkness Beneath the Surface in Christmas Story with Gothic Twist

CHAPEL HILL, NC, Nov. 16, 2023 — Eleanor Franklin is turning 88 on Christmas Day, and party guests include a cat in a tailored Christmas coat, the ghost of a Civil War soldier, an eccentric caretaker who is a Holocaust survivor and William Faulkner himself in the Pulitzer Prize-nominated book, Southern Light, Oxford, Mississippi, from Eileen Saint Lauren.

“While the prevailing tone of the story is the excitement of a party for the aging Eleanor, in fact, the polar opposite reality develops, intimated by the recurrent appearance of the Southern light,” Saint Lauren said.

Spanning from the American Civil War 1861 to Christmas Eve 1960, the story unfolds in the town of Oxford, Mississippi, near Faulkner’s long-time home of Rowan Oak, now located on the property of the University of Mississippi.

Southern mystique permeates throughout, as Saint Lauren blends the real and the fantastic, provoking readers to contemplate and understand people whose life experiences and perceptions appear outside the norm though are very real.

Hidden among the typical tree-shaded antebellum Southern homes and façade of small-town peacefulness are tormented souls and a dark, 25-year-old secret to which only one of the troubled characters is privy.

The unexplainable and the supernatural impact of place and spirit controls the people and the events in Southern Light, Oxford, Mississippi, resulting in what Saint Lauren calls “a dark, hilariously sad Christmas story.”

“Together, the haunted characters and plot seal the message of this timeless novel: ‘Truth can stand alone in any light but more so amid the Southern light,’” she added.

Giving Everyday Australians a Voice

In a world of fake news, scrolling feeds and instant gratification, Dimity Brassil is a strong believer that collecting the stories and wisdom of our elderly matters.

When she lost her father and sister within a couple of months of each other, Dimity realised she’d never hear the sound of their voices again. She didn’t want the same to happen with her mum, Anne, 90, so she asked if she could record her life story.

“When my father and sister died, I realised we really didn’t have a lot of history recorded about them – particularly of my sister, who was only 52 and left behind a 12-year-old daughter, and that we hadn’t captured many of her stories in her voice for her daughter to hear,” says Dimity.

“I wanted to do the same for mum, as she’s a really interesting person and has led a colourful life. She moved away at the age of 16 in 1950, as one of only two girls in Wagga who got the Commonwealth Scholarship to go to Sydney University.

“She led the creation of a very early Women’s Refuge – one of the first of 11 refuges in the state and was a foster carer for children in crisis. She also remembers the polio epidemic and seeing children in iron lungs in hospital.

“Mum later became a teacher and skipped out of school with the teachers and the students when Queen Elizabeth visited the area as part of her great Australian tour in 1954.

“Most people – even her children and most definitely her grandchildren – didn’t know the true extent of her achievements, her community work, or her astute, witty and often acerbic observations on the play of life.”

Anne agreed to record her life story and together they formed A Lasting Tale. As well as the professional podcast-like personal audio series, the platform also has a DIY interview guide for families wanting to interview their loved one themselves.

Dimity, who also works with retirement and aged care villages, palliative providers, libraries and community organisations, can also talk about:

• The cathartic experience of storytelling for our loved elders
• How storytelling can help people with Alzheimer’s and dementia
• Life tips and wisdom from the elderly and those with end of life illnesses
• Creating intergenerational kindness
• Story-sharing between the elderly and teenagers
• Storytelling to prepare for end of life
• How to create your own life stories
• Advocacy for regional and rural elderly residents

Dimity is a 2023 AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award NSW/ACT State Finalist. Her mother, Anne lives in Wagga Wagga, and is still telling a tall tale or two!

New book The Quest For Family explores how to move on from abuse to live a fulfilled life

With an astounding 39.6% of Australians aged 16-65+ affected by domestic violence, 32% having experienced physical abuse, and 30.9% impacted by emotional abuse, it’s no wonder there’s been an explosion of mental health disorders across the country.

The Australian Child Maltreatment Study revealed that child maltreatment resulted in significantly increased levels of major depressive disorder, generalised anxiety, alcohol use, and post-traumatic stress.

One woman who can relate to these statistics is Jessica Clancy, who recently published a book entitled The Quest For Family which outlines her life experiences, and how she has been able to move beyond the pain and suffering of childhood mistreatment to a fulfilled life of love and happiness and the creation of a new family unit.

The book explores her struggles from childhood to adulthood with her life severely impacted by the actions of her negligent mother who remarried several times and moved her around the US where she was exposed to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, neglect, and domestic violence.

As she says: “Our lives can often feel like shattered glass, and once it breaks, it is impossible to put back together on our own. We try to pick up the pieces, but just hurt ourselves more, often feeling hopeless and helpless.”

However, with sheer grit, and a strong faith in God, she was able to find peace and redemption to break the chains of her past to become firstly a hairdresser, then a registered dietician with a master’s degree in nutrition with a business minor. She is now a specialist dialysis dietician, and a published author.

One of her proudest achievements has been to create a happy family with her husband, and their two children aged 12 and eight.

“I believe our past does not define us. It is only part of the journey if we allow it to stretch and grow us. I am not defined by the things that happened to me,” she says. “Just as your past does not define you, remember to love others and not make judgements on their past or mishaps. You don’t have to stay hiding in the darkness of your past. You can step into the light to be exposed and redeemed.

“Family may not be inclusive of genealogy and genetic ancestors. It can have many different and implausible shapes and sizes. We all have kindred hearts drawn to each other and community, as we are not made to be alone.”

20 Tips for Healing and Redemption

1. Find faith and pray. Prayer changes things.
2. Learn to read and strive to learn; teach your kids to read.
3. Seek mentors and wise counsel. Find those who are successful in their own lives. Welcome constructive criticism.
4. Don’t be afraid to dream; set big goals and work hard.
5. Travel. Focus on simple things; nature, and the beauty around you. Seek to learn about other families and their cultures.
6. Don’t be afraid to talk about your experiences, good and bad. It is healing and helps you understand them better. If you are able to, speak to a professional counsellor or someone you trust.
7. Exercise, or be active, and focus on eating healthy foods. Research shows exercise can be like medicine for our minds and may help treat depression and sadness.
8. Accept your body. Don’t depend on weight loss gimmicks like pills, drinks, and unrealistic diet cycles. If it came in a pill and worked, everyone would be thin.
9. Journal about the experiences that impact you deeply.
10. Don’t let others define you, especially through social media.
11. Forgive. This will release you from much pain and help you receive your blessings.
12. Everything happens for a reason, and those experiences can help grow you as a person if you allow them to.
13. Help others; give back with your time and resources.
14. Don’t set yourself up for disappointment by having unspoken expectations left unfulfilled by others.
15. Learn to create safe boundaries to protect yourself and your family.
16. Practice being appreciative and grateful every day.
17. Be empathetic. Seek to understand others.
18. We all have a purpose. Finding and living out your purpose is healing and rewarding.
19. Don’t accept no for an answer unless you have exhausted all resources and avenues.
20. Count your miracles. The events that happen to us and influence us deeply may actually be miracles in disguise.
As 2023 draws to a close, now is a good time to reflect on the year that’s been and the year to come, says Jessica.

“From my own life experience, I wish to encourage others that have been affected by childhood abuse to know that they can move beyond the trauma to live the life they were meant to live.”

If you or someone you know has suffered from abuse, this book can help heal past hurts and help you recover and move on to live a healthier, happier life.

And for those who work in child services, social care, or support services, this story will help you reach others in a more impactful way.

The Quest For Family book is available from https://www.jessicaclancyperseveres.com/ and retails for US $19.99* (paperback) or US $8.49* (Kindle).

It’s no secret our male youths need some serious puberty supplies especially throughout the summer holidays. Nowadays, research tells us that the transformation can start as early as nine years old, yet there’s a serious lack of products available, especially for boys.

Founder, Jackie Baron said when her boys hit their tween years, she smelled trouble. Literally. She searched high and low for the cure to their funky body odour, when she saw her boy’s confidence take a nasty hit. Desperate to avoid a pile of aluminium-packed antiperspirants, which she knew was not the right fit for her young lads, she took matters into her own hands and decided to create NEON GOAT.

NEON GOAT – aka the ‘Greatest Of All Time’ – is a nod to th legendary athletes who’ve redefined their sport. But Baron didn’t want to stop there and added the electrifying word NEON, to uplift young male minds and hearts across the nation. In a world where social media can sometimes leave us feeling negative, NEON GOAT is a shining beacon of positivity.

On the 800th Anniversary of the Christmas Nativity Scene A Story Emerges That Takes Readers Back to That Time

Fort Worth, TX — It’s rare to find a holiday book like A Bellwether Christmas: it tells a story that can entertain every member of the family regardless of age, it reveals history about a beloved Christmas tradition, and it features charming animal characters.

Laurel Guillen’s work of fiction was inspired by a life-changing trip to Italy and years of caring for some remarkable farm animals.

“Many years ago,” Guillen said, “I visited central Italy and came away with a burning desire to write a novel set in the time of Francis of Assisi and the early Franciscans. I did extensive research, but nothing ever came of it. In the meantime, I raised a son who adopted farm animals, including a horse, two sheep and two donkeys. One Christmas season a few years ago, the plot for this novel suddenly downloaded into my brain in a few minutes.”

She added that she suddenly realized “I was being given the chance to write a novel that combined my knowledge of 13th-century history as well as farm animals. I knew it was supposed to be a children’s novel, but one that adults would love also.”

A Bellwether Christmas depicts medieval rural life from its songs to work, food to customs, and each chapter begins with a beautifully drawn illustration that evokes the style of medieval woodcut art. Guillen also includes “afterwords” to help readers understand St. Francis’s life and his importance to the Church, and to introduce readers to the real-life farm animals her characters are based upon.

Bart is a curious, impetuous lamb who lives in a tiny village in medieval Italy. He is always getting into trouble and feels like he doesn’t belong. In chance encounters with a hare, a lark and then a terrifying wolf, he learns about the poor man from Assisi who loves all creatures and talks to them about love, honor and belonging. Bart is convinced that this man, and the new kind of celebration he is planning for Christmas Eve, holds the key to understanding his own destiny. But when Christmas Day dawns, he faces his biggest challenge yet: a dangerous mission to bring the gift of love to a friend. Will he be brave enough and finally find the place where he belongs?

The winner of multiple awards, including a First Place Christian Indie Award and Finalist in the 2022 Readers’ Choice Book Awards, A Bellwether Christmas is full of historical details to entertain kids and adults alike and offers a perfect opportunity for parents to talk to their kids about the meaning of Christmas.

Laurel Guillen is a Cornell University graduate and former radio, newspaper, and television journalist who has always loved medieval tales. She helped her husband, Michael Guillen, PhD, produce the award-winning family movie Little Red Wagon and now writes the blog God and Gardening on Facebook.

IS IT R.I.P. FOR THE WORK CHRISTMAS PARTY?
WE’D RATHER HAVE WORK CHRISTMAS DOSH, SAY STAFFERS

• Awkward small talk and drunk co-workers cited as the most hated things about work Christmas parties

The traditional work Christmas party could be dead following new research revealing that the majority of UK workers would prefer a festive financial bonus over a staff Christmas party.

Awkward small talk (45%) and annoying drunk co-workers were cited as two of the most-hated things about seasonal celebrations with colleagues, according to research by Love2shop.

83% would choose a Christmas bonus or gift over a staff party, with over half (56%) not bothered about having a work celebration at all and almost a quarter (24%) saying they don’t like socialising with colleagues outside of work.

Workers say a £110 payment would be a sufficient alternative to a Yuletide soiree, according to the study, with 92% saying they would at least like to be given a choice between the two.

Around one in five workers (19%) want to receive this bonus in the form of a gift card or voucher, the data shows.

Surprisingly, the poll of 2,000 Brits revealed the average worker is forced to contribute £33 to fund their staff Christmas party to finance costs such as food, drink and decorations.

Just one in 20 Brits (5%) are lucky enough to get both a Christmas party and a financial bonus at Christmas.

Exactly half of UK workers (50%) generally do Secret Santa with their colleagues, with the average expenditure on a present amounting to £14.

Younger people aged 18-24 spend more than double the amount on their present than older co-workers, splashing an average of £23 compared to £9 for those aged 55-64.

Frank Creighton, Director of Business Development at leading gifting and engagement experts Love2shop, said that the research findings were a clear indication that festive financial rewards are exponentially increasing in popularity.

He said: “Everybody has experienced a rise in their cost of living since the pandemic, so it’s hardly a surprise to see the work Christmas party become less and less of a priority as people struggle to make ends meet during the festive period.

“This should be a wake-up call for UK business owners to start listening to what their employees want – and that’s a financial bonus. The money that would otherwise go on a seasonal celebration could be better spent going straight into the pocket of employees.

“While the benefits of a cash injection in December are evident, employers should also note the knock-on effect it can have on their workforce, increasing morale and retention rates in the long run.”

Bûche de Noel or Yule Log – this is a tradition from hundreds of years ago when we celebrated the winter solstice. As a dessert, it has many possible origins, but really became a proper dessert in the 1940’s in Poitou-Charentes. It is classically a genoise cake, rolled, then decorated with buttercream. Today you find all sorts of creations, the one we made last year was light with a genoise, fruits, fruit cream and whipped cream.

“I WISH IT COULD BE CLEAN-MAS EVERY DAY!”
AS THE JINGLE-BELLS RING FOR CHRISTMAS, GET YOUR HOME READY WITH THE ULTIMATE 12 DAY CLEANING COUNTDOWN

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but for many families the stress of the festivities can be overwhelming as they prepare to host loved ones throughout the holiday season.

Expert cleaning and laundry brand, Dr. Beckmann has given the gift of cleaning this Christmas, with a festive 12-day countdown of top tips, to ensure you’ll be rocking around the tree – dirt free!

12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS CLEANING

DAY ONE: I’m dreaming of a GloWHITE Christmas
After you’ve dusted off your old Christmas decorations and rejuvenated your snowmen and angel soft toys, enhance their brightness with Dr. Beckmann’s Glowhite ULTRA. Simply add one fabric whitener sachet to your laundry and you’ll achieve great results and instantly revive those dusty dull whites.

DAY TWO: Snow is falling all around us – clean it!
As we edge closer to Christmas, many of us will be spraying fake snow onto our windows for decoration, but this can leave behind stubborn residue which a cloth struggles to remove. Use a combination of lemon juice, distilled water and a drop of essential oil, shake the mixture, and then spray it over the residue. Wipe away to eliminate any remaining snow on your windows.

DAY THREE: Winter windows
Once the stubborn stains are gone, make sure you don’t let any mucky fingerprints or dirt ruin your Christmas window display. Use a dedicated glass cleaner and spray the window surface – to get the best non-drip effect, spray roughly 20-30cm away. Then, buff in circular motions with a soft and dry cloth until your windows are sparkling clean.

DAY FOUR: Christmas chimney charcoal
This season is one of the coldest times of the year, so many of us will be making use of a cosy warm fire. When making your fire, charcoal stains tend to spread and end up in various unexpected places. To eradicate this, simply blot the blemish with lukewarm water integrated with washing up liquid and once completed, gently dab the area with a cloth until the mark has disappeared.

DAY FIVE: Getting too merry!
Christmas can be a time to celebrate with an alcoholic beverage or two! If you do enjoy a drink and get extra jolly this Christmas, spillages may occur. A red wine or mulled wine stain can be your worst nightmare, so to solve this, make sure Dr. Beckmann’s Stain Devils – Fruit and Drink is waiting in your cupboard. Apply the product lightly on the stained fabric and leave to work its magic for 3 minutes.

DAY SIX: Festive fridges
Make sure your fridge is ready to store the turkey, pigs in blankets, nut roast, and vegetables. Start by emptying the fridge completely and removing the shelves and drawers for a thorough clean. Use a mixture of hot water and baking soda to wipe down all surfaces and don’t forget to clean the seals with warm, soapy water, to ensure a fresh and clean fridge for the holiday season.

DAY SEVEN: Paw-fectly clean-up after your pets
Get your pet’s bed ready for the festive season, put it in the washing machine for a deep cleanse and tackle any stubborn stains with a stain remover – they’ll be too comfy to disturb Santa when he comes to visit! To prevent muddy pawprints from staining Santa’s suit or your carpet use Dr. Beckmann’s Pet Stain & Odour Remover, ensuring that winter walks won’t leave a trace – much like Santa and his mince pies!

DAY EIGHT: Christmas crumbs
The lead up to Christmas is a time to relax and enjoy everything the festivities have to offer, including tucking into your favourite foods. However, crumbs can end up in the most discreet places, make sure to give your home furnishings a refresh before welcoming guests by using a handheld vacuum cleaner or a lint roller.

DAY NINE: Twinkle Twinkle little toilet
As the Christmas celebrations ramp up at home, with a constant flow of guests, it’s easy to overlook daily but important chores and keeping the toilet clean is crucial! Don’t worry, using a specialist cleaner ensures an effortless sparkle, making it shine as brightly as the north star – simply pour a sachet in and watch it do the magic.

DAY TEN: Sweep Santa’s secrets away
If Santa’s or your guest’s ho-ho-hooves make quite a mess of your floors, use a damp sponge with warm water and gently wipe away the footprints, starting from the outer edges and moving inwards to help prevent spreading the marks. If they end up on the carpet, make sure you have a dedicated stain remover in the cupboard ready and waiting!

DAY ELEVEN: Deck the halls with clean appliances
Cleaning your appliances does not have to be a chore on Christmas Eve if you start early and create a cleaning schedule over several days or weeks leading up to the holidays. Appliances like our dishwashers and washing machines seem to be running endlessly during the holiday season so need some extra TLC. Dr. Beckmann’s Service-it Deep Clean range will ensure your appliances stay gleaming, ensuring all your clothes and dishes are left sparkling clean in snow time.

DAY TWELVE: Give the gift of a guest room
As Christmas season gets in full swing, many of us will have guests staying overnight, so it’s time to prepare the guest bedroom. Wash all sheets, bedding, and duvets beforehand and work some Christmas magic with Dr. Beckmann’s Magic Leaves Laundry Detergent Sheets – available in both bio and non bio variants.

On getting your home Christmas ready, Dr. Beckmann spokesperson, Chloe Baker said: “We hope that our 12 day of Christmas cleaning tips help people tackle the homes in the lead up to the holiday without it seeing like a mammoth task. Taking each area day by day, will ensure your homes are left shining merry and bright, allowing you to see the new year in with a fresh, clean start!”

Sleep Apnea is the most Googled sleep condition in Belfast, study finds

• The high volume of Sleep Apnea searches in Belfast may reflect the city’s increasing focus on health and wellness, particularly in sleep quality.
• Sleep Apnea tops the UK’s list and affects more than ten million people nationally.
• Insomnia and Restless Leg Syndrome rank second and third in the UK, respectively.
Here are the top five most searched for sleep conditions in Belfast:
• Sleep Apnea
• Insomnia
• Restless Legs Syndrome
• Sleep Paralysis
• Narcolepsy
The study also revealed the sleep issues that the UK searches for the most.

The analysis undertaken by bedroom furnishings experts Bed Kingdom focussed on Google search volume data for common sleep disorders such as Insomnia, Narcolepsy, Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), and Sleep Apnea to identify the most frequently searched conditions across the UK. The study also considered related search terms, including “treatment,” “therapy,” and “diagnosing,” to reveal the most queried conditions/disorders.

The most common sleep issue affecting the UK public is sleep apnea, which receives an average of 147,253 Google searches each month. The medical condition, which causes sufferers to stop and start breathing during the night repeatedly, is estimated to affect up to ten million people nationally.

Sleep apnea was the most searched-for sleeping condition in 72 out of the 73 UK cities analysed, including London, Manchester, and Glasgow. Some common symptoms of sleep apnea are loud snoring, periods during sleep where breathing stops (often reported by a family member or partner,) and gasping for air during sleep.

Insomnia is the second most searched-for sleep issue in the UK, with 112,215 Google searches each month. Affecting an estimated one in three people, insomnia leads to difficulty in getting to or staying asleep.

Insomnia was the most searched-for sleep condition in Derby and appeared in the top five searches in every city, with the most searches coming from Leeds, Birmingham, and Liverpool.

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is the third most searched-for sleep issue in the UK, with 90,696 searches each month across the United Kingdom. This disorder causes an uncomfortable sensation that generates the uncontrollable urge to move the legs and can make long flights or even a trip to the cinema a stressful situation.

RLS appeared in the top five most searched-for conditions across all 73 UK cities analysed, with cities such as Derry, Carlisle, and Leeds contributing the highest number of searches.

Sleep Paralysis is ranked fourth as the most searched-for sleep condition in the UK, with 66,576 searches across the UK on average each month. Sleep Paralysis is a condition often characterised by the terrifying inability to move upon falling asleep or waking. It’s thought it’s caused by disrupting the transition between REM sleep and wakefulness.

Sleep Paralysis appeared in the top five searches in all 73 UK cities analysed, with the highest volume of Google search traffic coming from Coventry, Leicester, and Bradford.

Narcolepsy is the UK’s fifth most searched sleep condition, with 43,564 searches on average each month. The condition that causes people to fall asleep suddenly appeared on every city’s top five most searched for sleep disorders and received the highest number of searches for terms which included ‘Narcolepsy symptoms’ and ‘what is narcolepsy’ from Edinburgh, Sheffield, and Newcastle.

Jet lag places sixth and receives 32,564 searches each month on average. Of the 73 cities analysed in this study, jet lag appeared in the top five most searched-for conditions in 48, where places like Croydon, Luton, and Walsall searched for terms such as ‘what is jet lag’ and ‘jet lag symptoms.’

Bruxism is the seventh most searched-for sleep condition, where across the UK, 20,035 people are searching for terms such as ‘Bruxism treatment’ and ‘What is bruxism’ each month on average. Bruxism, which involves involuntary grinding or clenching of the teeth, ranks in the top five most searched-for conditions in 16 cities, which include Wrexham, Lincoln, and Preston.

Night terrors are the UK’s eighth most searched-for sleep condition and receive 17,937 Google searches each month from people across the UK. This unpleasant condition affects an estimated 2% of the public (at least 1.34 million people). It is in the top five most searched-for conditions in nine cities, with the highest searches coming from Hereford, Mansfield, and Norwich.

Hypersomnia ranks ninth as the UK’s most searched for sleeping condition, accounting for 10,294 Google searches on average each month. The condition, which causes sufferers to feel excessively tired during the day or sleep longer than usual at night, is most searched for in Bath, Salford, and Burnley.

Sleepwalking rounds off the top ten most searched-for sleep conditions in the UK, with 6,438 searches each month dedicated to this complex condition each month. Sleepwalking can manifest in behaviours ranging from mundane activities to more unusual ones like eating, sexual activity, or, rarely, criminal acts, and is estimated to affect about 2% of adults, equating to approximately 1.34 million individuals.

The cities of Wigan, Worcester, and Exeter showed the highest interest in seeking information about this disorder, which is thought to be passed down through genes, where terms like ‘what causes sleepwalking’ and ‘sleepwalking in adults’ were the most searched.

The variety of these sleep disorders underscores the impact of modern life’s stressors on sleep health. Balancing stress management with focused treatments for sleep disorders is essential for improving the nation’s sleep wellness.

Speaking on the findings, Ashley Hainsworth from Bed Kingdom commented:

“While stress is a significant factor, it’s essential to recognize that sleep disorders can have diverse origins, from alcohol consumption to the type of bed you sleep in. Overlooking this fact could lead to missed underlying health issues. It’s important to seek professional advice and treatment if you suffer from any of the sleep conditions mentioned in this study.”

Her recently launched RÄK Spirits, a fruit-based, vegan, gluten-free, carb-free, grain-free product with no added sugars or artificial flavorings, is made simply by distilling a variety of fruits and adding water.

Avoid these festive pet perils for a calmer Christmas, warn UK vets
The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has warned pet owners of the risks posed by unsuitable food and other festive perils over the Christmas season. Traditional treats, presents, decorations and chocolates will be arriving in many households this month. But these seemingly innocent pleasures must be stored securely by pet owners if they want to protect their pets and avoid an emergency trip to the vets this year.
Chocolate, raisins and other dried fruit – such as that in mince pies or Christmas puddings – onion, garlic, xylitol in sugar-free products and seasonal decorations like mistletoe and holly can all be dangerous, and even fatal, to dogs and cats if eaten. BVA Voice of the Veterinary Profession research carried out last year revealed that four in five companion animal vets saw at least one case of toxic ingestion over the 2021/2022 festive period.
Our most recent stats showed that 76% of vets saw cases of chocolate poisoning and 69% saw dogs taken unwell after easing raisins or sultanas. Around a fifth (19%) reported cases caused by the artificial sweetener Xylitol. Foreign body ingestion in dogs was also common, with gifts for humans, being the most common cause (14%) while consumption of Christmas decorations and gifts for pets (12%) were also highlighted by vets as causing issues.
And dogs weren’t the only animals requiring emergency treatment: more than a quarter of vets (27%) also saw cases of toxic ingestion in cats, who were most likely to have ingested non-food items such as seasonal plants like holly or mistletoe (reported by 18% of vets) or antifreeze (seven per cent). Thirteen per cent of vets saw cats with foreign body ingestion.
British Veterinary Association Junior Vice President Liz Mullineaux, said: “Vets across the country will be on call over Christmas but there’s nothing we’d like more than empty waiting rooms and all of our patients safe at home. Unfortunately, the fun human festivities include a lot of potential perils for pets. So we strongly recommend being vigilant and taking a few key precautions to keep your pets happy and healthy over the festive period.
“Keep all tempting treats, decorations and anything else a pet may mistake for food out of their reach to prevent an emergency visit to the vet. We also recommend keeping pets to their normal diets and avoiding feeding them any human food. But if you are concerned your pet has eaten something they shouldn’t, please do contact your vet as soon as possible.”
Top tips for keeping Christmas hazard-free for pets
1. Protect your pet from poisons: A range of festive treats and traditions, such as chocolate in advent calendars and sweets, raisins, xylitol (found in sugar-free treats), nuts, grapes, liquorice, poinsettia, holly and mistletoe are toxic to cats and dogs.
2. Keep decorations out of reach: Ribbons, wrapping paper, baubles, tinsel and tree lights can seem like appealing playthings to cats and dogs but can be very dangerous if broken, chewed or swallowed. Batteries for Christmas gifts also need to be kept safe as, if ingested, they may cause severe chemical burns to the mouth, throat and stomach.
3. Forget festive food for pets: We all enjoy a richer diet over Christmas, but fatty foods and Christmas dinners shouldn’t be shared with the animals of the household. They can trigger sickness and diarrhoea or other conditions from gastroenteritis to pancreatitis, so try to stick to your pet’s regular diet and routine. Too many treats can also lead to pet obesity.
4. Keep away the bones: Cooked bones, including turkey bones, should not be given to pets as they can splinter and puncture the digestive tract.
5. Know where to go: Even with all the care in the world, animal accidents and emergencies can still happen. Make sure you’re prepared by checking your vet’s emergency cover provision and holiday opening hours or, if you are away from home, use the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons’ Find a Vet facility.
