Carrickfergus RFC U15s plan to end the season in style at the CRFC Youth Sections Annual Dinner on Friday night.
The teams major success this season was in winning the U15s Ulster League after a long & hard campaign, CRFCs Youth Section into the premier league competition a couple of seasons ago has ensured that they are playing against the best sides in Ulster Branch youth rugby & in fact are the only non AIL club in the competition.
A second place in the premier league only one point behind great rivals Banbridge ensured a home semi final in the play offs against a determined & battle hardened Virginia XV , a 13 minute flurry of points saw Carrick take the tie by 12 points to 5 but not before producing a defensive display that many senior teams could only envy.
Inevitably Banbridge qualified from the other side of the draw with a walkover against Dungannon. and the stage was set for a neutral venue Blaris showdown.
As with all games between these two sides there was absolutely nothing to separate the sides at full time in what was a pulsating final, with 17 points apiece on the board the first try rule was invoked & Carrickfergus U15s became Ulster league champions, a hard blow for the Banbridge coaches & players who were worthy opponents all season.
A cup semifinal defeat by Banbridge was only fair from the better team on the day denied Carrickfergus U15s the chance of a league & cup double but yet another cruel blow was dealt to the Bann when defeated by City Of Derry in the Ravenhill showdown.
