Carrick Ladies rugby is going from strength to strength this season, with the team currently undefeated, sitting top of the Ulster Qualifying League and awaiting the final of the Ulster Ladies 10’s competition.
Having won the Ulster Qualifying league last season after suffering defeat at the hands of only one team, Carrick should have been promoted to their former AIL Division 2, however unforeseen factors saw Carrick lose a number of key players and the decision was made to stay in the Qualifying League.
The team now have a break before the final of the Ulster ladies 10’s tournament against City of Derry on 14th December. Carrick triumphed in the previous 2 rounds, held in Derry and Carrick respectively, beating All Ireland sides Cooke 19-7 and Harlequins 22-0 along the way. The final will be a nervous day, as the teams are competing for an all-expenses paid trip to the 2014 Six Nations at Aviva Stadium.
Captain Sabrina Higgins said ” the team have been working hard since pre-season and we’ve made some positional changes this season which really seems to be working out. Despite having such a small squad, we’re top of our league and are still yet to be defeated. The girls have shown such dedication and determination to win and I don’t think it’s gone unnoticed.
We’ve been busy on and off the pitch, this season we are supporting the Belfast Rape Crisis Centre and have been fundraising for them and have volunteering planned for the new year. It’s an exciting time to be involved with Carrick Ladies and I’d definitely advise anyone interested in joining us to come down on a Tuesday night”.
The team were also busy during pre-season, having entertained the USA and Canadian sides during the World Police and Fire Games and Killygarry Gaelic Football Club as part of the Peace III cross community project. The team and coaches welcomed both sets of visitors to Tom Simms Memorial Park to train, play and socialise.
Carrick ladies train at Carrick rugby club on a Tuesday night from 7PM. More information can be found at Facebook.com/CarrickLadiesRFC or by calling Sabrina on 07557 257723.
