United Rugby Club Women’s tour:
United rugby club is a product of a merge between two local clubs in the Vancouver, Canada area. Douglas and Pocomo Rugby clubs were both successful at times, but by the turn of the millennium they were struggling for players in the same area. So they decided to merge in 2005. With this merge, United became one of the largest women’s sides in North America.
They currently run two senior women’s teams, and a junior girls (U18) team. United is successful on the pitch – this year they sent both their senior teams to the provincial finals, and coming away with a win in second division. And United is social off the pitch – they like the feeling of team camaraderie and enjoying a beer with your opposite after the game. After five years of being together, a tour seemed like the perfect thing to do. One of their players had the possibility of being selected for the women’s world cup side, so the decision to head over to London, catch a game, tour Scotland and Ireland and come back for the final seemed like a perfect trip! The player was not selected for the squad, but they will be supporting Canada anyways.
From London, they are spending two days in Edinburgh, fitting in a match against a mix of clubs then heading to Glasgow for 4 days to soak in some Scottish culture (with possibly a day spent at a highland games competition). From there they ferry to Belfast to compete in the inaugural Belfast Harlequins women’s sevens tournament. Then it’s off to Dublin to complete the tour before catching the final of the women’s world cup – where Canada will be going for gold! (fingers crossed : ).
The ladies are getting very excited for the tour – The history and culture in Europe is amazing, and to couple that with the rugby culture is going to make for the perfect trip. The girls are always up for a pint, so feel free to come share one at the Harlequin 7’s, they would love to get to know some locals and get the inside scoop on the best rugby, beers and food Belfast has to offer!
Intouch would like to wish them every success and we look forward to keeping up to date with all the action from the tour, not to mention the Harlequin 7’s.
