On Tues 23rd of March American club side WILLAMETTE Rugby played a hard fought game agaisnt Instonians RFC 4ths.
We caught up with the side and their captain Stephen Scott after the game,
“The match last night was a hard fought battle between equal teams with different playing styles. Though Willamette learned much from the match, high among the most treasured memories we will take back to America are those from the post-match social.
Our team gained the friendship and earned the respect of the Instonians. And Instonians served only to increase the high regard in which they are held.
Brian (Inst captain) and I exchanged plaques and kits. The exchange reinforced that even separated by thousands of miles, we not only share – but embrace a common bond to our rugby community.”
Willamette in action against Inst.
The tour included a stop in Dublin for a Six Nations game and a visit to Edinburgh, but the stop at Instonians was rather special as one of the Willamette squad had actually played the previous season at Instonians.
It is great to see the links with rugby in Ulster developing across the Atlantic and we wish Willamette rugby every success in the future.
