At the recent club AGM Willie Duffin was voted in as president. As the start of rugby training for the new season was announced last week, he was looking forward to the year ahead.
Willie said it was an honour and a privilege to lead the club. But he has no illusions about the task ahead.
He said: “Last year’s successes will be difficult to follow but we must look forward and face the challenges that lie ahead and this year will be particularly difficult with the ongoing economic crisis
“We have a strong management team in place but we need support from the entire club to keep going. I am calling on all past and present members to come along and lend support to the club and the teams that represent the club and town so well.”
Willie has a special word of thanks for all the club sponsors. He said: “To our sponsors, without whom we would struggle to survive, thank you for your generous support in the past and for your continued support in the future.”
The cricket season is still underway, and there have been some very encouraging results, but already training for the new rugby season is up and running.
Rugby training formally kicks off on Tuesday 19 July at 7.30pm. Coaches are looking for a good turnout from all of last year’s players and a warm welcome awaits new or returning players as preparations begin for the season ahead.
Last season produced some fantastic results with the Firsts and Seconds finishing third in their leagues. The Thirds also had a great season. The Seconds and Thirds also performed strongly in the Crawford Cup with the Seconds reaching the final against Armagh at Ravenhill on Easter Tuesday.
The entire club is looking forward to the new season and hopes are high for another remarkable season, for all the teams. Remember a good season starts with preparation and a good turn out at training is essential.
