As winter arrives the rugby season continues and Physio`s are inundated with players requiring treatment for tears and strains. The jump in the amount of players on the physio table is a combination of the drop in temperature and players not completing a proper warm up. A warm up is important at all times of the year but even more so during the winter months. A 10-15 minute warm will get blood pumping to your muscles and soft tissues and warm up your entire musculoskeletal system. As your body begins to generate heat your connective tissues soften and become more pliable and are then less likely to get injured. Some things that you could include in your warm up are… jog a few laps of the pitch, shuttle runs, mini circuits (press ups, burpees, leg swings, high knees), bounds, passing and kicking drills. These moves should leave you fully warmed up and prepared for your match. Even though your muscles are warm, injuries can still occur, so if you need a Physio to assess, treat or follow up any injuries. Body Lab NI can help. As the official sports injury clinic for The Belfast Giants we have experience in all manner of injuries and will be able to get you quickly back on the rugby pitch.
