Series leaders New Zealand secured top ranking spot for day two and will face Ireland in their Cup quarter final. Canada, impressive in wins over Ireland, Japan and Australia, edge Houston champions England into second in the end-of-day rankings. Canada will face seventh-ranked Brazil in their Cup quarter final.

England, who defeated USA in the key Pool C clash, will play the Netherlands, who drew with Brazil in between a win over Tunisia and a loss to New Zealand.

Australia will take on USA in the other Cup quarter final.

Bowl semis

Hosts China were unlucky not to make the Cup quarters, being edged out by Ireland on points difference. They will play Tunisia in the first Bowl semi final.

Fiji, who led England at one stage and showed some sublime handling skills in difficult conditions, will face Japan in the other Bowl semi final.

On a day of near-continual rain and a 40-minute delay during a lightning storm, the standard of rugby on show was impressive, whilst the pitch held up extremely well.

The action resumes at 10am local time (2am GMT) on Sunday with the first Cup quarter final between New Zealand and Ireland.
