Quins U17 got their season off to a good start with a win over Ophir. Well done guys! Harlequins U17 17 – 0 Ophir U17
Wednesday night’s fixture against Ophir was the U17s first game of the season.
We had a full squad available combining experienced players with a number of boys playing their first ever game of rugby, so it was particularly pleasing that with regular personnel changes we played as a team throughout to secure the win.
The teams were well matched in a competitive first half. Quins had most of the territory, were dominant in the scrum & the lineout was working well. However, there were a few handling errors and turnovers as you would expect in the opening game and the final ball just didn’t go to hand.
After some sustained pressure on the Ophir defence Quins were awarded a penalty but the resulting place kick drifted wide.
The first half ended 0-0 but the score did not reflect the excitement or intensity of the game.
Quins received kick off and made clear their intent from the start of the second half. Ophir were defending well until a searing break from Quins left wing opened up space for the first try which was duly converted.
As Quins kept the high tempo and Ophir tired more gaps appeared in the defensive line. A second try was scored following another break through the back line and good support from the pack. The third try was a superb solo effort again off the left wing position. Both conversions were missed but by now the lead was enough to ensure victory.
It was a team effort and the whole squad were fantastic – Stuart, Warren, Simon, Kevin, Ryan, Curtis, Conor, Calum, Joe, Niall, Peter, Darragh, Hugo, Stephen, Chris, Jonny, Matthew, Conor and Paul all contributed to a big performance.
However, special mention must go to captain Josh, who led the pack by example and also to left wing Phil who played a part in creating the first two tries then left a string of Ophir defenders in his wake to score under the posts for the final score of the match.
Thanks also to the parents who came along to watch – we look forward to seeing you at the next game!
