Quins show great character to come back from a 13 point deficit to clinch victory at Stevenson Park.
This really was a game of two halves!
Dungannon looked comfortable with a 13-0 ahead and nine minutes of the first half remaining. However, a converted Stuart Olding try just before half time ignited a flare of confidence in the visitors. They then went on to score a further 16 unanswered points through the boot of Michael Heaney and a Michael Ferguson try.
‘Gannon Outhalf Jaryd Bennett got his side off to a good start with an early penalty goal on 4 minutes. Seven Minutes later Centre Stuart McCloskey increased the home sides lead with a long range penalty goal.
‘Quins struggled to settle for much of the first half and there were numerous unforced errors. It was from a knock on that ‘Gannon quickly snatched up the ball and with the visitor’s defence in disarray, Stuart McCloskey feed winger Mark Faloon who sped in to touch down behind the posts. Bennett added an easy conversion.
‘Quins regrouped and they were soon attacking the ‘Gannon half. The ball was recycled quickly 15 metres out and Stuart Olding with options outside him, spotted a gap in the home defence and lit the afterburners to zip over the line just right of the posts. Heaney added the extra points just before the end of the half.
Half time 13-7
From the restart ‘Quins forwards started to flex their muscles and were to dominate much of the loose play in the half.
‘Gannon were pinged for holding on in the ruck after just 1 minute of the half. Rather than opt for a kick to the corner, Heaney stepped up and opted for an awkward kick at goal from just 5 metres inside the ‘Gannon half. The decision was rewarded as Heaney was successful to close the home sides lead to three points.
A confident Heaney was again called upon at 55 minutes and brought ‘Quins level with ‘Gannon with another penalty goal.
‘Quins defence was relentless and they were now making numerous surges into the ‘Gannon half as the home pack seemed to tire.
From a ‘Gannon lineout on their own 22 ‘Quins replacement lock Michael Ferguson ripped the ball from an opponent’s hands and rampaged his way over the home line to score his sides second try. Heaney was on target again with the conversion.
‘Quins continued to camp in the home half with only minor ‘Gannon incursions being repelled by a robust defence.
With 5 minutes remaining another Heaney penalty left ‘Gannon requiring two scores to regain the lead, but at this stage it was a goal too far for the home side.
