Strabane who are double league champions with the I & II XV + the I XV made it all the way to the Gordon West Final found themselves facing up a very very very very good Belfast Harlequins side. And even though the first 25 minutes or so was nip and tuck Belfast Harlequins combination of excellence in all areas was really awesome! The opening exchanges were a matter of the two sides testing each other out and after about 10 minutes there was a real effort by both sides to have a go at each other which was absolutely frenetic. However Belfast Harlequins grew more confident and after a penalty which got them on the score board they opened the tanks a bit and 5 minutes later were 10 – 0 up, not sure of the following scores, may have went 15,0 or 15, 7 but without a doubt Harlequins continued to move forward.
Strabane were really dissapointed but coach Willie Gibson made it very clear that all of this is leading towards one thing and that is the I & II XV getting their first few games under the belt in their new leagues next season.
The McCambley Cup today was a superb game – flowing rugby utilising the full width of the pitch with tight quarter forwards plays expertly put together.
