Quins 4XV 59 – 12 Ards 4XV
Nine Tries Seal Solid Victory for 4s
The 4s produced a solid performance against Ards 4s on Saturday at Deramore and while the score-line suggests it was all one-way traffic Ards did make a game of it and put the Quins team under a lot of pressure especially in the first half. The conditions were near perfect for running rugby and the Quins backline did not disappoint, making the most of having Tim Elliott at full back for his farewell game before heading to the other side of the globe.
In a very frustrating opening 20 minutes the 4s, looking a little lacklustre after their cup win the previous week, missed at least two golden opportunities to open the scoring (I think the term is “we butchered a few”) but stuck to their task well and did what they have been doing all season which is tackling like demons against more physical looking opponents. Rather fittingly it was Tim Elliott who crossed for Quins first try of the day. After some good forward play and quick handling by the centres he ran yet another of his great lines to split the Ards defence and go in under the posts. Scotty converted to make it 7-0 after 21 minutes. Quin’s second try came from a basic handling move some slick passing by McC and Dr Fergal putting Ben Craig in for his second try in two starts. The conversion made it 14-0 and it was soon to be 21-0 when McC jinked his way through several defenders accelerated past the full back and went in under the posts. Ards did control their own ball well with ex-Quin Andy Matchett directing operations at scrum-half and for a five minute spell battered the Quins line but the defence held firm and Scotty’s trusty “new” boot eased the pressure on several occasions. On 30 minutes Tom Price scuttled over in the left hand corner for his first of two tries to make it 26-0 in front of his adoring lady friend and then, scored three minutes later on the other side of the pitch (showing off really to be honest!) and with Scotty converting the score of 33-0 put Quins firmly in the driving seat. Undaunted, Ards then scored twice in quick succession just to remind the Quins men they were in a game and at half time the score read 33-12.
In spite of a rather poorly delivered and grumpy half-time team talk by the balder of the two so-called coaches, the 4s started the second period well with Gareth running strongly and making a lot of ground along with Harry, McC, Tim and Pete Brown and within five minutes the score was 38-12 when Harry hit a great line from a ruck to score just right of the uprights. With the conversion it was 40-12 and shortly afterwards Tom Monty rounded off a great piece of running rugby by the entire team when he blistered over the line from 20 metres out to make it 47-12 with the conversion. Tim then scored the final try of his Quins 4s career (for now anyway) rounding the Ards full back to the delight of his parents to make it 54-12 with the conversion and the last try of the day was scored by Harry Orr who has simply got fitter with each game. Final score 59-12 to the 4s.
All in all it was a good team performance (when the boys got started) with the forwards yet again proving that they can compete with larger opponent’s week in week out. The front row had a different look to it due to Martin Malseeds thirteenth career retirement declaration during the week however Tom, Matty and Kieron produced a good solid display and excelled in the loose however they have yet to learn the art of ambling like the retired “duffle-coat clad” veteran. Pete and Ian Scott were very good in rucks and mauls and although feeling a little ill before the game Gardiner put in another of his gritty performances. Harry and Lewis tackled well all game and won a lot of quality ball for Tom who played possibly his best game in a Quins shirt to date. Scotty, McC and Fergal did extremely well both in attack and defence and with Gareth and Ben making several intrusive sorties into the Ards half a victory was pretty much assured after half time. Impact subs Kev Fog Thomp and SW Monty faired well when they came on (and heres hoping someone gets Monty a spray tan for Christmas). However, for his two tries and composure in attack and defence, the man of the match was awarded to Tim Elliott. All the players, ex-players and management would like to wish Tim the very best in his new role and his new continent. There will always be a warm welcome for you Tim when you return to Deramore. To all the players who have played for the 4s so far this season thank you for your efforts both at training and on a Saturday and we hope you have a peaceful pleasant and merry Christmas. The next game is due to be played on 31 December at home against Malone.
