As part of the pre-season build-up at Bangor Rugby Club, last weekend the fitness coaches added a twist to the training schedule by organising a ‘4 Peak Challenge’ in the Mourne Mountains. Under the watchful eye of Tony Hefferman and Stephen Addy, a large contingent of senior team players started their journey from Bloody Bridge, following the river and then merging with the quarry track to the Mourne Wall at the Bog of Donard. At this point a breather was taken before climbing to the top Slieve Donard, the highest point in Northern Ireland. After a short break, the route carried down to the saddle of Donard, down to the Brandy Pad and then over Slieve Beg, and onward to Cove Mountain. After traversing upper Cove and then dropping down to lower Cove, the group scrambled down from here to set up camp and complete their first day’s journey at the bend in the river in Annalong Valley. A little light refreshment and entertainment (in the normal style of rugby players) was enjoyed by all before retiring for a good nights sleep.

The next day started early with Tony giving the lads a gentle wake up call. Before starting their descent, they climbed out of the Annalong Valley via the Hares Castle, picked up the Rocky Mountain river, and headed once more for the Mourne Wall, which was then followed to the Bog of Donard and then back down to Bloody Bridge via the quarry track.
Those who took part are to be commended for their efforts – this was a tough challenge, made even more difficult by the worsening weather. A big thanks also goes to all those who contributed to the planning and safe completion of the weekend, with special mention to Stephen Addy for his excellent and very necessary navigation skills.
New signing at Bangor Rugby Club
Last Thursday (28th July), Bangor Rugby Club recruitment officer, Danny Curran, moved quickly to snap up another exciting signing, which will hopefully help to ensure the future of the club.
Cole Jenson Wootton was brought to Upritchard Park, agreed a contract and signed on the line. 2-day old Cole was heard to say, “This is the best decision I’ve ever made”. His proud father Dave was in attendance to witness the event.
The club extends its appreciation and congratulations to Dave and Julianne on their happy event, and trust that the remainder of the front row will follow in due course.
