This eagerly anticipated event was without doubt one of the best social nights Upritchard Park has seen in recent times.
As the opener in a series of social events planned throughout the coming season, Paddy Robinson’s brainchild seemed straightforward enough. Get a pig, roast it, and gather some mates round to eat it. The organisational reality was somewhat more involved. The pig was perhaps the easiest bit. Under the expert guidance of Shane Cheatley, a 55kg rare breed, Gloucester Old Spot hog was sourced and prepared. Once on the spit, it was a simple matter of leaving it to cook for several hours, apart from the occasional check (and taste).
An alternative meat in the form of a couple of dozen chickens was prepared by Serreli Magoon, using his special blend of Southern Pacific spices. Salads and other accompaniments were provided by members of the rugby committee, with a little help from Knotts of Newtownards. Many others pitched in to help in whatever way they could.
That just left the drinks promotion, ballot and associated prizes, music and weather. Thankfully everything came up trumps, and the rest, as they say, is history.
While Paddy must take the plaudits for pulling the whole thing together, special mention must be made of those who supported the event by generously donating their products or services.

The bar has certainly been set high with this opening event. No doubt the 1st XV will rise to the challenge for the next one, details of which will follow in due course.
The recommencement of the Mini rugby season moves ahead with a recruitment campaign across Bangor.
With training having just started back, Bangor Rugby Club’s Mini Rugby section is extending a welcome to primary school children from across the wider Bangor area to come along to Upritchard Park on Sunday 11th September an 2:00pm to ‘join the scrum’ and ‘give rugby a try’. If you’re a boy or girl at primary school level P2 to P7 and would like to find out more about this popular and competitive sport, you’ll be made very welcome.
