Hugh passed away five years ago but is never too far from the thoughts of many players and members at Bangor Rugby Club, along with his classic one liners of “lift your feet, they’ll fall them selves” and “Don’t kick what you can’t pass”.
Hugh ran the youth section at the club for many years and saw almost 400 players come through the ranks, many of whom he helped off the pitch as well as on it. He also took many of his youth teams on rugby tours to Scotland and two under 18 tours to further fields and pitches, in 1994 to America and in 1996 to South Africa.
Hugh also annually ran boxing day at the club, including a game in the morning, a festive fun ballot in the afternoon and a disco in the evening. And in respect and as a tribute to the great man this Boxing Day will see the first year of the Hugh McCutcheon Cup being played for. It will be a match between the over 30’s / married vs the single men at the club. The match kicks off at 12pm, with the club house open from 11:30am for the players.
After the game, up in the bar once again there will be the ‘Festive Fun Ballot’ and it would be great to see as many old faces at the club for what is sure to be a ‘jolly’ afternoon.
And if you can’t bring yourself to lace up the boots, be sure to come along and support those brave enough to do so.
