Chris Napier dived over to score the second Hinch try.
This fixture in south Dublin was always expected to be a tough encounter; the students like Ballynahinch have had an unbeaten start to this season Ulster Bank League Campaign.
From the kick-off the Hinch kept the ball in hand taking play direct to the students especially through the midfield where James Thompson and Stuart Morrow caused a few problems in the early exchanges. Thompson almost scored after the first Hinch attack but as he headed for the line he was stopped by a great UCD cover tackle.
Hinch opened the scoring in the 12th minute when UCD went over the top at a ruck giving Chris Quinn a penalty opportunity which he successfully converted taking the visitors 0-3 clear.
UCD started to put the Hinch men under pressure for the next 10 minutes with the visitor’s defence holding firm. Eventually the student won a penalty, which was quickly tapped giving winger Sam Colgan Murray the opportunity to cross for a try. The conversion by James Thornton was successful giving UCD a 7-3 lead.
Hinch lost the services of James Thompson in the 28th minute who had to retire due to a thigh injury. Aaron Ferris replaced Thompson.
In the 30th minute the Hinch dived in at a ruck just inside their own half and Thornton struck the penalty goal to make it 10-3.
Two minutes later Chris Quinn created a wonderful individual try out of nothing and then converted to take the score to 10 points apiece.
Just before halftime Paul Pritchard almost made it in for a second try but he was stopped by a last ditch ankle tap leaving the score tied 10-10 at the interval.
