It was a bit of a try fest at Ballymacarn Park as the home side powered to an impressive 9 try to 3 victory over the Belfast students in the opening salvo of this seasons Ulster Senior League.
After a fairly even start Harry McAleese opened the scoring for the Hinch in the 18th minute with a neat bit of inter-passing with Stuart Morrow, which created a gap for McAleese to cross under the posts. He then added the extras to give the Hinch a 7-point lead.
This advantage was short lived as Queens hit back from the restart. The Hinch side failed to secure the ball which second row Paddy Magowan collected and quickly fired play left where winger Matthew Johnston raced over to score for the visitors. David Kelly failed to covert leaving the students trailing 7-5.
Hinch hit Queens with a double blow from full back Adam Craig. The Hinch fullback missed most of last season due to injury was making a welcome return to action. His first score came in the 25th minute when a 5 metre scrum was moved right and Craig forced his way over in the corner for an unconverted try. From the restart the home side gathered and playing with real flare and pace they pushed Queens deep into their 22, this time the quick ball was moved left with Craig on the end of a sweeping backline move to make the extra man, scoring in the corner. The try went unconverted to leave home side 17-5 in front.
The fourth Hinch try came in the 33rd minute when Stuart Morrow intercepted outside his 22, he made good ground before feeding outside to Aaron Ferris who raced clear to record the bonus point try which was converted by McAleese to leave the score at halftime 24-5 to the Hinch.
Queens made the better start to the second half and had 10 minutes of pressure deep in the Hinch 22. Their reward was a well-worked score; a second try for Matthew Johnston after good lineout ball from Magowan was flashed wide for the Queens winger to cross in the corner. Kenny missed the conversion to leave his side trailing 24-10.
In the 57th minute a lovely bit of skill from James Thomson created a gap for him on the Queens 10 metre line and he raced clear and cross just left of the posts. McAleese convert for a 31-10 lead.
Hinch grabbed their 6th try in the 64th minute when the pack took a ball against the head in a scrum on halfway David Drake was quick to react he picked up and sprinted trough a gap and clear to dot down under the posts. McAleese converted to take Hinch 38-10 clear.
Try number 7 came in the 71st minute following a great midfield break by Niall McBriar who then put centre James Thompson clear to cross for his second score. The conversion was good from McAleese to give the Hinch a 45-10 advantage.
In the 73rd minute Queens second row Paddy Magowan was driven over for a well worked try which went unconverted to make it 45-15.
Adam Craig grabbed his hatrick in the 37th minute with McAleese adding the extras to leave the Hinch 52-15 clear with two minutes to play.
The 9th and final try was a full of great running and continuity play. Michael Graham and Matthew Irvine led the charge with Drake, McAleese and Thompson putting Niall McBriar clear to dot down under the posts. McAleese added the extra points to finish the game the Hinch winning 59-15.
