Towns’Cup – Portadown 3 Ballymena 24
Ballymena 2nd XV travelled to Portadown to meet Qualifying League Division 1 leaders Portadown in the frst round of the Towns Cup. A really difficult match had been expected, but, as it turned out, Portadown seldom troubled a determined Ballymena defence. The visitors opened the scoring when Rory Drysdale intercepted a floated pass to run sixty metres for a try which he converted. Shane McBurney rounded off a fine move for Ballymena’s second try, again converted by Drysdale. Both sides swapped penalties to bring the half time score to 17-3 in the visitors’ favour. The only score of the second half was a fine individual try by Darrell Montgomery to make the final score 24-3.
