WINGER WARDROP RUNS IN FIVE TRIES FOR CLARE
Ballyclare put the recent loss in the Towns Cup to Clogher valley -incidentally the first defeat at home in two years, behind them on Saturday when they ran out 48-14 winners at Belmont against Grosvenor. This was a record making performance from multi position back Adam Wardrop with a superb five tries -the win also brought another bonus point but Omagh also picked up one.

In the opening minutes a break by N.Lawther led to Weatherup putting G.McKinstry in on the right for the first try.The Clare backs were well in control and a run from Crawford again was taken on by Weatherup and Wardrop took the ball to go over with Smith converting to lead 12-0.Even though Grosvenor had the wind advantage again it was the busy Weatherup who was halted at the line but Wardrop followed up to score and Smith added the points.Next it was skipper R,Boyd who drove deep and off loaded to Wardrop who collected his hattrick and Byers converted for a 26-0 lead after only 25 minutes. This stung the home side whose number8 went over from a five metre scrum and the full back converted. An overthrow at the next lineout by the Clare enabled the home wing to go in for a fine try again converted so it was 26-14 at half time and possibly game on.
Ballyclare now had a tricky period as Grosvenor missed two penalties, Logan was sin binned and G.McKinstry was injured but continued after treatment.Mid way through the half Weatherup raced clear and found Wardrop who went over once more to extend the lead.A break from N.Lawther should have brought another score but Loughlin just failed to hold the pass. But another powerful surge by R.Boyd from the 22 gave Wardrop the chance to collect that record fifth tryin the corner. A fine win for the league leaders was rounded off as prop D.Lawther outpaced the home defence and Morrow added the points to leave it at 48-14. Apart from an early second half relaxed period, this was a brand of open attacking rugby at real pace from the White Hares.
