The Number Eight
The Number 8 does not have a specific name and is simply referred to as the number eight. In the scrum, he sits at the far back between the locks (second row) and gives them that extra umph that provides added weight during the push. On the offensive side of the ball, he can choose to pick and go from the scrum, or control the ball and protect the scrum half.
Around the pitch their primary role is really as a support player, rucking and tackling. They are also typically a very strong ball carrier, and most teams utilise these players as line breakers in attack.
Some notable players that play this positon are –
Jamie Heaslip (Ireland) – A key leader both on and off the field with an athleticism that would see him make an excellent flanker, Heaslip leads from the front and helps get his side go forward at every opportunity………………. see more at :- http://www.independent.ie/sport/rugby/international-rugby/the-back-row-all-you-need-to-know-30745305.html
