What was old is new again, thanks to a trio of artisanal soapmakers. Mohammed M. Mahdi, Mohammed A. Mahdi, and Anthony Duncan, co-owners of the Indiana- based Soapy Soap Company, are disrupting the soapmaking industry with a proprietary, new manufacturing method which has enabled the launch of DesignMySoap.com, the world’s first online soapmaking studio.

“Design My Soap” visitors first choose a soap formula suited to their skin type and then add in essential oils, exfoliants, and other

ingredients for soap tailored for their specific needs. They also can choose from several label designs and name their custom soap creations.

“There’s nothing really out there like it,” Mohammed M. Mahdi explains. “The process that we’ve developed is a unique way of

making soap where it’s instantaneously ready to use.” Customers receive their custom soap within about 10 days, and the

soap needs no additional “curing” period. “We spent a lot of time perfecting our soapmaking process.” Mohammed M. Mahdi says. “All

the lye in our formulas is fully converted into usable soap right away.” The soapmakers also pH test every batch to ensure it is safe for use.

Mahdi continued, “Customers can even design and order just one bar of soap. We don’t have any sort of minimum quantities. Other soap

companies could probably make [custom] soap, but they may have a requirement of 100 bars or 200 bars.”

Recently featured on the “Reply All” podcast, the new venture has gained international attention, and orders have come in from

Australia, Canada, the U.K., China, and across the U.S. “We’ve always wanted to do something that no one else has done
