Players, coaches and manager gather for Senior Awards presentation.

Players, coaches and managers from Ards 1sts, 2nds, 3rds and 4ths gathered at Hamilton Park on Saturday evening.

Outgoing Ards Rugby Club President Mike Spence performed one of his last official duties in presenting the awards.

The presentation of awards took place after the Heineken Cup Final and those who attended had a good evenings craic.

There were some notable absences in the awards winners due to their attendance at the Heineken Cup Final, but fellow team members readily volunteered to step up and take their awards in their absence…..most notably Matt McMullan who had had his hair specially cut and ”The Face of Ards Rugby’ (or should that be the gob!!) Trevor Devlin who stepped in for Assistant Coach Alan Benson.

Awards winners were as follows:
1st XV
Player’s Player of Year – Rob McCausland
Coaches Player of Year – Scott Young
2nd XV
Player’s Player of Year – Conran Stewart
Coaches Player of Year – Pete Croan
3rd XV
Player’s Player of Year – Ashley Peden
Coaches Player of Year – David Chivers
4th XV
Player’s Player of Year – Andy Matchett
Coaches Player of Year – Andy Todd

Club Top Try scorer – Stevie McKee (29 tries – new club record)
Club Top Points Scorer – Stevie McKee

Young Player of Year – Kyle Agnew
Club Player of Year – Scott Young

Club President Mike Spence then thanked the outgoing senior coaching and management team of Mervyn Tweed, Alan Benson and Robin Johnston for their dedication and commitment to Ards Rugby Club not just in the past 2 seasons but in previous seasons; Mike made a small presentation to Mervyn Tweed and Robin Johnston as a token of the Clubs thanks and Trevor Devlin accepted on Alan Benson’s behalf.

Mervyn then thanked the current player’s for their commitment to him on both the training field and the match field; Mervyn encouraged all the players to stay together at Ards and commented that they were a young team, all locally based and had the potential to develop into a really good team.
Mervyn endorsed the new coaching set up of Stewart Porter, Gerry Flynn and Scott Young and offered them his full support and good wishes for the future.
