1st XV – Ards 13 v 20 Naas

Ards RFC were dissapointed to loose this game after leading throughout. Naas however in the end scored more points and were right behind Ards all the way until the last few minutes of the game.

It was gutting for the Ards boys to loose after playing open expansive rugby and competing successfully at the lineout scrum and ruck level.

Ards had a fantastic try scoring opportunity in the last 10 minutes just failing at the last hurdle on the wing 3-4 metres from the try line. Naas on the other hand completed almost exactly the same move to find the rub of the green in their favour and touched the ball down for a try in the last few minutes.

We get the feeling that Ards are about to make that break through few weeks where the intensity of AIL brings out the best in players and they will produce the Ards spirit once again.

Congrats to Naas on the victory.

The standard of Rugby was excellent from both teams.

2nd XV – Ards 24 v 27 Malone

Another close fought battle at Ards. Both teams scored throughout the game and displayed some excellent rugby. The elements were perfect on the day apart from quite a unpredictable wind.

Malone will be very happy with the win as the Ards team are emerging and will only get better and better.

There’s still plenty of opportunity for more ladies to get involved with the squad though, so come on girls what’s keeping you, let’s see you down at training on Wednesday nights 7 – 8.30pm, and let’s get up and running sooner rather than later.

Youth

The U17s get their league season going on Saturday with a visit to Hamilton Park of North Belfast side Ophir. Ophir are another developing side and should provide stern opposition for the young Ardsmen. Kick-off is at 11am.

The U15s have been put into a development structure and details on their games should be known soon.

Mini

The Minis hosted Ballynahinch and Belfast Harlequins Mini sections at Hamilton Park last Sunday.

There were literally hundreds of people enjoying a day out in the bright autumn sunshine either playing or cheering on their teams throughout the afternoon.

When the last tries were scored and the final whistles sounded, everyone headed home feeling very pleased with their efforts at the end of a very enjoyable day.

Special thanks are extended to everyone who helped make the day go so well and to all those who supplied sandwiches for the post match ‘chinwag’ and cuppa afterwards.

Mini rugby at Ards is open to both boys and girls and is held on Sundays from 2 – 3.30pm and everyone will be very welcome.

Sport Bursaries

Young people in Ards have the chance to scoop a £500 award by applying now for one of three Blair Mayne Bursaries.

Anyone under the age of 25 who lives in the Ards Borough and who aspires to excellence in one of three categories – sport, academic study or adventure training, can apply for a Bursary as a way to help them to achieve a goal or realise a particular project.

Recent awards have gone to talented sports men and women, musicians, students and adventurers, all of whom received bursaries to pursue their ambitions.

Chairman of the Blair Mayne Bursary Committee, Alderman Ronnie Ferguson, is encouraging other young people to take advantage of the funding on offer:

The Bursary represents a great opportunity for any young person to pursue a goal or ambition and can be used to contribute to the cost of anything from specialist training, tuition or equipment to undertaking an expedition or enabling someone to travel for the purposes of voluntary or charitable work, said Alderman Ferguson. All any young person needs to show is a commitment to aspire to excellence in their chosen field and I hope again to see a diverse number of quality applications.

The Bursary was established with excess funds from a public appeal to erect a memorial to Lt Col Blair Mayne DSO, and is intended to reflect his life and achievements by encouraging young people to aspire to excellence.

The closing date for applications is Wednesday 27 October 2010. Further information and application forms are available from Ursula Mezza at Ards Borough Council, Tel: 028 9182 4021, E: ursula.mezza@ards-council.gov.uk or from HYPERLINK “http://www.ards-council.gov.uk/servic” www.ards-council.gov.uk/servic
