BALLROOM DANCING, YOGA AND BAKING – THE SECRET HOBBIES THAT BRITISH MEN WANT TO KEEP FROM YOU!

Research has revealed that despite spending an average of 12 hours per week watching, playing or thinking about sport, 73% of men admit that they now actually spend more time than ever on non-sporting hobbies.

The study, commissioned by the MARS Milk Play Fund, found that one in five of men aged 18-34 have taken up baking, while 50% say they have given yoga a go. And a further 15% would like to test their ability at ballroom dancing.

But, despite the massive male interest in such activities, 42% of 18-24 year olds and more than half of men aged 25-34 keep non-sporting activities a secret from their friends.

23% of 18-24 year olds admitted that they keep these activities a secret as they are worried people will laugh at them while more than a third of 24-35 year olds fear that they will come across as too ‘geeky’.

And it is not just the younger generation trying their hand at more non-sporting hobbies, 32% of men spend one hour 18 minutes on photography and 13% spend one hour and 6 minutes playing their favourite instrument in a typical week.

While sport has certainly not fallen off the agenda, British men spend 2.7 hours more per week on non-sporting hobbies they did than two years ago, and 3.5 hours more than five years ago.

Michelle Frost, spokesperson for MARS Milk says: “While sport is still a huge part of British men’s lives, it is great to see that they are taking a more holistic approach to a balanced lifestyle and enjoying the same hobbies as women. Having variation in the activities we partake in is incredibly important for both mind and body.

“However, we need to ensure that the opportunities are there for men and women to continue to play sport and to encourage those that currently aren’t participating in any sporting activities to take up something new. This is why we have launched the MARS Milk Play Fund.”

MARS Milk is seeking to help people spend more time on their favourite sport with the launch of The MARS Milk Play Fund.

The Fund, which runs until October 4 2015, has 49 cash awards to donate every month to sports people, clubs and projects.

The fund is open to residents of, and clubs and organisations based in the UK and Republic of Ireland only. Applicants must be 13 years or over and only one application will be accepted per person, club or organisation.

Applications to the fund are now open and can be made on the MARS Milk website www.marsmilk.com.
