1st XV win 8-3 at CIYMS in league
Instonians defeat CI to maintain their amazing winning sequence in league and cup this season.
CIYMS 3 – Instonians 8, 12 win in the league!!
Instonians kicked off this away league game at Belmont. There was a bitterly cold, strong, gusty wind which blew diagonally in their favour in the first half. The game started in bright sun light but soon became overcast with squally showers. This made it difficult to play flowing rugby. It was also punctuated by the referee’s whistle. In fact he awarded a total of 30 penalties throughout the game – 13 in Instonian’s favour and 17 against. The combination of weather and whistle meant that there was little continuity to the game. Rarely were there more than half a dozen phases before a whistle went.
With their wind advantage Instonians made the early running in terms of territory and possession. The first penalty in their favour came after 4 minutes and was awarded about 30 metres out and near the touchline. They elected to kick for touch and set up a strong attacking platform about 8 metres from the CI line. The line out was won and mauled by a determined set of forwards. Several drives later they were close to the CI line but then knocked on to give CI a chance to clear their line from the resulting scrum.
