The thaw set in on Wednesday and grounds men across Ulster inspected the pitches. As the hours progressed the signals came in that games where going ahead. Not all unfortunately but lots and we readied ourselves for the battles to come.
A quick look at the fixtures highlighting an excellent game to cover – Wellington college v Lurgan. The first game of the schools cup.
A fantastic crowd had assembled to watch this game and the nerves where clear in the first half as both teams struggled to keep the ball with exchanges back and forth leading to various fumbles and missed opportinities.
And then the second half. Like two different games. The Lurgan kickers boot had secured a lead in the first half, but Wellington grew in confidence with each venture into the Lurgan half, a period of sustained pressure on the Luragn 5 metre line coming from well worked line breaking from the centres.
15-20 minutes into the second half and BREAK THROUGH, sustained pressure from Wellington led to a scrum and an explosive drive from the back of it for a Wellington try. The big man who scored it will cherish that moment!
The flood gates opened, Wellington had the magic and all their skils kicked into place seeing them surge into the Lurgan half from every bit of possession, they scored again and converted, defended with zeal and probably could have scored a few more.
Lurgan are a good team and can do better, they have the muscle and skill and have been well marshalled, we are delighted to see them and look forward to covering both teams moving forward.
Below are highlights from the game for both sides icluding video of each side, interviews with coaches and Brian Lyle the referee.
