Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Round Up Saturday 24th September 2022
Eight teams have entered the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ U16 Cup competition for the 2022/23 season.

Four Group Stage games took place on Wednesday 21st September.
In Group A Ballymena Academy played Wallace High in a game the Wallace High School team won by 19-5.
Royal Belfast Academical Institution hosted Belfast Royal Academy and won the closely contested game by 19-15.
In Group B Campbell College, Belfast played Royal School, Armagh and recorded a 40-12 victory.
Methodist College, Belfast entertained Sullivan Upper School and won this Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ U16 Cup game by 17-8.
In the Danske Bank U16 Plate Competition 2022/23 competition four teams elected to be involved.
Two Group Stage Week 1 fixtures were played on Wednesday 21st September.
Ballyclare High School hosted Coleraine Grammar School and won the game by 24-5.
Regent House School played Rainey Endowed School and it was the Rainey Endowed School team that returned home with a 32-15 victory under their belts.
As well as the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ U16 Cup and Plate games played on Wednesday 21st September, a number of 1stxv games took place on the same afternoon.
Ballyclare High School, with a Senior Select squad, hosted Antrim Grammar School and Wellington College, Belfast in a blitz format tournament with all teams using extended squads in the course of the afternoon.
The Antrim Grammar School team defeated the Ballyclare side by 7-5 with Jack McNeilly scoring the try which was converted by Matthew Adair.
The Ballyclare team defeated Wellington College, Belfast by 40-0.
The final game of the afternoon saw the Antrim Grammar School team defeat the Wellington College team by 27-5.
Patrick Dunlop, Alexander Lynn, Dylan Choudary and Angelo Simangan, with a brace, were the Antrim Grammar School try scorers. Alexander Lynn was successful with two of his conversion attempts.
Ballymena Academy played Royal Belfast Academical Institution and maintained their undefeated start to the season with a hard-earned, but ultimately well-deserved, 24-17 victory.
Daniel Heyburn, Callum Mustoe, Daniel Vercoe-Rodgers and Tristan Ferguson scored the Ballymena Academy tries with Tristan Ferguson adding two conversions.
Josh Gibson, James Clark and James Hilman scored the Royal Belfast Academical Institution tries with Alex Place adding one conversion.
Limavady Grammar School played Coleraine Grammar School in game which saw the Coleraine Grammar School team travel without their U16 players as well as their Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ players. This gave the Coleraine GS coaching staff the opportunity to play members of their extended senior squad.
The final outcome of this closely contested game was a well-deserved 13-10 victory for the Limavady Grammar School team.
The Limavady Grammar School points came through a Joe Caldwell try alongside a conversion and two penalty goals from the trusty boot of Benjamin Howe.
The Coleraine Grammar School team scored two unconverted tries from Noah Gordon and Matthew Curry.
On Friday 23rd September Banbridge Academy hosted Omagh Academy in a late afternoon kick off.
The Banbridge Academy team emerged from this fixture as 19-12 winners having taken an early 12-0 lead. The dynamic Conor Magee scored two early tries, one of which was converted by Ryan Matthews, to give the Banbridge team their early 12-0 lead.
The Omagh Academy team, with players such as Callum Doherty, Conrad Hale, Allister Crawford and James Fleming to the fore, fought back strongly following their shaky start to the game. A moment of brilliance from Sam Beattie led to a penalty try, on the stroke of half time, which reduced the Omagh Academy arrears to 12-7 at the break.
The second half of the game turned out to be a closely contested affair. With players such as Fergus Always and Callum Little impressing for the home team, the Banbridge Academy team scored an intercept unconverted try through Tom King, which was converted by Ryan Matthews, to increase their lead to 19-7.
However, the Omagh Academy team displayed great commitment and got some reward for their endeavours when Joshua Keys took advantage of a well-constructed driven maul, following an attacking line out, to touch down for an unconverted try which left the final score reading Banbridge Academy 19 Omagh Academy 12.
On Saturday 24th September quite a few 1st fixtures were played.
Antrim Grammar School played Lurgan College in a closely contested game which the Lurgan College team won by 12-10.
The Antrim Gramar School team, for whom Josh Harvey put in a Man of the Match performance, scored their points through a brace of unconverted tries from Eoin Byrne.
Peter Bird scored two tries and converted one try for the Lurgan College team.
Ballymena Academy played Bangor Grammar School and maintained their positive start to the season with a comprehensive victory. The game was played in a great spirit by both teams and the Ballymena Academy players and coaches were delighted with the reception they received from Bangor Grammar School.
The Bangor Grammar School team had Jack Mason and Alex Shaw to thank for their points.
The Ballymena Academy team had good performances from players such as Sean McKay, Mark Glenn, Joshua Gallagher, Callum Mustoe, Daniel Heyburn, James McIlroy, Reece Williamson, Ethan McKillen, Callum Ervine, Alex McBurney and Robbie Coleman.
Belfast Royal Academy played Methodist College, Belfast and it was the Methodist College team that came away with a 28-10 victory at the no-side whistle.
Peter Richardson scored the Belfast Royal Academy try to which Josh McKee added the conversion as well as one penalty.
Ben McFarlane put in a Man of the Match performance with two tries and four conversions for the Methodist College team. Josh Stevens and Matthew Scott weighed in also with one try each.
Cambridge House Grammar School entertained Dalriada School in a game the Dalriada School team won by 21-10.
Jamie Watt and Luke Elliott each scored an unconverted try for the Cambridge House team.
The Dalriada School try scorers were Adam Nesbitt, Stevie McCamphill and Ben Stewart. Gabriel Stubbs-Carton was successful with all three of his conversion kicks.
Coleraine Grammar School played Regent House School and emerged from a very close encounter as 19-15 winners.
The Coleraine GS team scored three tries through Conor Drayton, Noah Gordon and Zack McCartney with Jordan McCauley adding two conversions.
The Regent House School team scored two tries through Zeki Kaya and Ryan Copeland with Zach Campbell adding one conversion as well as one penalty.
Friends’ School, Lisburn played Dromore High School in another very close encounter which finished with the Dromore High School team as 14-12 winners.
Sam Netherton and Angus Crawford scored the Friends’ School tries with Paddy Moore adding one conversion.
Adam Little and Callum Bradley scored the Dromore High School tries with Nathan Hook adding two conversions.
Larne Grammar School played Ballyclare High School in a game which the Ballyclare High School team, having used an extended squad of players, won by 33-12.
Ethan Anderson and Cian Ferguson scored the Larne Grammar School tries with Ethan Duncan adding the extras to one of the tries.
James Cochrane, Neil McCrea, Isaac Shiels, Angus Catherwood and Austin Martin scored the Ballyclare High School tries to which Joel Flynn added four conversions.
Portadown College hosted Belfast High School in a high scoring game the Portadown College team won by 36-24.
Josh Herron scored a hat trick of tries for the Portadown College team with Sam Herbert, Mitch McClelland and Tyler Jackson each touching down for one try apiece. John Speers was successful with three of his conversion kicks.
Daniel Bennett, Lucas Thompson and Joey Ashby scored the Belfast High School tries with Daniel adding three conversions as well as one penalty.
Rainey Endowed School played Foyle and Londonderry College in another high scoring encounter with the Rainey ES team emerging as 54-20 winners.
Jaydon Shiels, Nathan Overend and Matthew Booth each touched down for two tries, for the home team, with Euan McKay and Sean Bentley each scoring one try. Owen O’Kane was successful with seven of his conversion kicks.
James McKillopp scored two tries for the Foyle and Londonderry College team with Jack Craig and Dara Herron each running in for one try.
Royal Belfast Academical Institution played Sullivan Upper School and won the game by 26-0.
Flynn Morrow scored couple of tries for the Belfast Inst team with Josh Gibson and Bryn Ward each touching down for one try. Alex Place was successful with three of his conversions.
At the same time a Royal Belfast Academical Institution “Select” team played Down High School in a game which finished as a 10-10 draw.
The Belfast Inst team scored two unconverted tries through Callan Johnston and Luke Beattie.
The Down High School points came through two unconverted tries from Matthew Douglas and Matthew Foster.
Royal School, Armagh played Enniskillen Royal Grammar School and got back to winning ways with a 27-12 victory.
Kristoffer Mackenzie, Josh Lowey and Archie Johnston scored the Royal School, Armagh tries with Josh Watterson adding two penalties as well as three conversions.
The Enniskillen Royal Grammar School team scored two tries through Daragh Love and James Morrison with Tadhg Hambly adding the extras to one of the tries.
Royal School, Dungannon played Grosvenor Grammar School for the Chico Cup on the WK Armstrong Pitch in Dungannon.
The Royal School, Dungannon team held on to the trophy with a comprehensive victory.
Players such as Christy Brace, Cameron Shaw, Alfie Lewis, Reuben Gibson, Jacob Clarke and Man of the Match, Matthew Burrows, stood out for the Royal School, Dungannon team with their strong performances.
Wallace High School entertained Campbell College, Belfast in a high scoring game the Campbell College, Belfast team won by 35-27.
The Wallce High School try scorers were Noah Lucas, Callum Johns, Sam Warwick and Quinn Armstrong with Charlie Beattie adding one penalty as well as two conversions.
The Campbell College team scored five tries through Will Alexander, who scored two, Callum Faith, Jake Daley and Chris Massey. Matt Rea was successful with all five conversions.
