Match Report
Limavady v Lisburn
Saturday, 25th January 2020
Limavady got the second half of their league season off to a fine start with a solid victory over Lisburn. This was a top v bottom clash and that is how the final result panned out. After six minutes Luke Faulkner notched the first points of the day when he converted a penalty following an offside infringement. For the second week running Limavady let their opponent get the first try of the game. Limavady had possession of the ball however a misplaced pass allowed the Lisburn winger to run in for a try. As per last week this seemed to trigger the home side into action and a flurry of tries were to follow. Left wing, Stewart Roddy continued his excellent season when he finished off a fine move to score his twelfth try of the season. An excellent conversion attempt from Luke Faulkner into a strong swirling wind restored Limavady’s lead. Russell Blair was then next on the scoresheet as he used his strength to force his way over the line. Luke again converted. Limavady continued to move the ball freely through the hands and it was only a matter of time until Peter Wilson raced in for try number three, with the extras again added. The try bonus point was secured shortly after when Jody McMurray picked up at the base of a scrum and dived in over the scoreline. The final try of the first half came right on the half time whistle when, following good work by Ben Riley, who then slipped a pass to the supporting John McCollum who touched down under the posts.
Half Time : Limavady 34 Lisburn 5
The second half was quite scrappy with both sides making silly mistakes and thus leaving the referee with no other option but to blow his whistle. It took Limavady twenty five minutes before they notched their next points. Following good work by the forwards the ball was quickly transferred through the hands and ended with James McBriar touching down. With only five minutes left Jim McCartney kept his good try scoring record going when he scored try number seven. Coach, Graeme Eastwood, whilst acknowledging that there is still improvements to be made, was delighted with a further bonus point win and keeps them top of the table and on target for their quest for promotion that they so narrowly missed out on last year. Next week sees the side return to Cup action when they travel to Carrickfergus to take on a first division side. With some players missing for various reasons this will be a good opportunity for others to step up and prove their worth.
Limavady 2nds played Lisburn second string and also recorded an excellent win by 36 points to 10. Try scores were Matthew King (2), Dylan Purdy (2), David Craig and Harry McAleese with Harry adding to his tally by slotting through three conversions. Next week the 2nds have a home fixture against Portadown.
