Match Report
Lisburn v Limavady
Saturday 14th December 2019

Limavady travelled to Lisburn this week in Round 8 of the current league season. Having won their previous seven matches they were keen to extend this run further. The game was played in bitterly cold conditions and credit to the players on both sides for putting on an exciting game. Limavady probably had their poorest display of the season so far but still managed to return home with the points in the bag.

In the early part of the game both sides cancelled each other out. Lisburn struck first when they converted a penalty granted after a scrum infringement. Five minutes later Limavady responded when Jason Kerr managed to get in, to dot down in the corner. The conversion was missed. Lisburn restored their lead when they kicked another penalty. Again Limavady responded with another try. The instigator this time was James McBriar when he spotted a gap near the line. He was stopped just short but had the presence of mind to slip a pass to the supporting Jamie Millar to finish off the move. Jody McMurray converted to take the score to 6.12 in Limavady’s favour.

Half Time: Lisburn 6 Limavady 12

The second half was only a few minutes old when Peter Wilson and Stephen Dickey worked a well rehearsed move between them to put Dickey in for his third try of the season. Jody again was successful with his conversion. This should have been the catalyst to go on and win the contest however Lisburn took the game by the scruff of the neck and scored two converted tries to close the gap to just two points. With only five minutes remaining Lisburn were awarded another penalty. Their scrum half stepped forward to slot the ball between the posts to complete an excellent day for him off the tee. Hearts were now beating a lot faster as it looked like Limavady, from a place of strength now faced their first defeat of the season. However, the side proved their strength of character when they managed to get their bonus point try, forwards and backs combining to put Stuart Hull in, in the corner. The final play rested with skipper Jody McMurray as he slotted over a penalty to leave the final score 23.30 to Limavady

A hard fought game. Limavady returned to the changing rooms very relieved to have come through a tough test. A positive sign though of a good team is when they can achieve victory even when they haven’t played to the best of their ability.

Conference League fixture next Saturday verses Ballymena 2nds at the John Hunter Memorial Grounds.
